India welcomes China's entry to WTO club

India has welcomed the accession of China to the World Trade Organisation, saying it will help universalise the international body.

In a statement delivered at a session on the accession of China to the WTO at the WTO meet, Commerce and Industry Minister Murasoli Maran said India had consistently supported the move.

"History bears testimony to the strong and longstanding economic, trade, political and cultural relations between India and China, which have withstood many tests of time."

The decision to include China was taken at the Fourth Ministerial Conference of WTO that is currently underway in the Qatari capital.

Maran said India looked forward to working constructively with China as a member of the global trade body. "China's accession to the WTO will make a significant stride in achieving the goal of universality of the WTO," Maran said.

He said negotiations in China's Accession Working Party had already brought to light a number of common interests across a wide spectrum of areas dealt within the WTO and underlined the belief that the two countries would have many occasions for developing common approaches to steer the future work of the WTO.

"We also believe China's membership of the WTO is an important track in progressively harnessing the potential for bilateral trade and to provide transparency, predictability and certainty for the trading entities of both our countries through the legal framework of WTO agreements," he said.
