Steep hike in postal tariffs from June 1

Postal tariff has been hiked from June 1 with the doubling of the price of the post card to 50 paisa and increase in charges for various other services.

Printed post card will be dearer by Re 1 at Rs 3, while competition post card will now cost Rs 5 instead of Rs 4, an official release said.

The new postal tariffs were proposed in the Union Budget for 2001-02.

According to revised tariffs, letters weighing below 20 grams would cost Rs 4.

There would also be a uniform Re 1 increase for letters weighing in excess of 20 gms and book, pattern and sample package.

The registered newspapers will also attract a higher tariff. Parcels below 500 gms will attract a tariff of Rs 16 instead of Rs 12 at present and those above 500 gms will continue to be charged at Rs 15.

Registration will now cost Rs 17 instead of Rs 14.

Concessional registration f e for printed books has been doubled from Rs 1.25 to Rs 2.50. Acknowledgement delivery fee has been raised from Rs 2 to Rs 3.

The fee for book packets containing printed books and periodicals have been hiked ranging from 50 paise to Re 1.
