KBC may topple Baywatch as most popular TV showRaksha Hegde Kaun Banega Crorepati, the hugely popular Amitabh Bachchan-hosted gameshow on Star Plus, may soon enter the Guinness Book of World Records for being the most widely-watched TV show in the world. Star India chief Peter Mukerjea said: "I have it from authoritative sources that KBC will soon be entering the Guinness Book of World Records for being the most widely-watched show in the world." Mukerjea refused to divulge further information. If this were to happen, media mogul Rupert Murdoch, who controls the Star Group, would have more than one reason to celebrate. To enter the famed record book for the most widely-watched TV series, KBC would have to dislodge Baywatch, which is telecast on other Murdoch-owned channels, and on Star World in Asia. KBC has not only turned out to be a popular show. With its launch, Star India has seen a complete turnaround in its fortunes. From being a laggard, behind Zee and Sony, Star has since become the market leader, and now airs more than half of the top shows on Indian television. On the Guinness World Records Web site, Baywatch -- the US television series on beach beauties and lifeguards -- has been slotted as "the most widely watched television series", boasting of a peak viewership of 1.1 billion. But for Antarctica, the series is accessible in every continent, and is aired in 142 countries, after its re-telecast in June 1996. On the other hand, KBC, telecast from July 2000, is the Indian version of the international gameshow Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?. While viewership figures could not be ascertained, Star officials say the gameshow may have been submitted for a whole new slot altogether. KBC, which promises a booty of Rs 10 million, has caught the fancy of the vast Indian middle-class and has effectively provided a whiff of fresh air to the Star group, which had been struggling to garner viewership figures.
