July 4 bank strike called off

The United Forum of Bank Unions has called off its nation-wide strike scheduled for July 4 following conciliation proceedings by the regional labour commissioner (central) in Bombay on Friday.

During the second round of talks, the forum, representing nine bank unions, has agreed 'to commence negotiations' for payment of arrears in instalments for bank employees of United Bank of India, UCO Bank and Indian Bank, this fiscal.

At the meeting with the Indian Bank Association, the forum agreed that the concerned banks' unions shall discuss with the management the schemes for all round growth and progress of these banks, UFBU said in a statement.

The unions have also extended full co-operation for better performance of the three banks, the forum said.

The UFBU had called for an all India strike on July 4 followed by another on July 17 to press for wage arrears for the employees of the three banks due to them from November 1, 1997. Except for these three banks, all other banks have paid the arrears due to the officers and workers.
