AOL-Time Warner honours Seema ChristieEla Dutt
AOL-Time Warner on Friday honoured Seema Christie of Teen People magazine with an Andrew Heiskell Community Service Award. Now in their 20th year, the Heiskell Awards are presented to ten employees of AOL-Time Warner who have made exceptional contributions in public service, equal opportunity and human rights. Christie, of part Indian origin, is an art director at Teen People magazine in New York, NY, and was nominated by her peers. The company said Christie is dedicated to using her talents as an art director to enrich and improve the lives of children in need. For the past three years she has volunteered on nights, weekends and during the summer with Free Arts, a non-profit organization that has the objective of bringing the therapeutic power of the arts into the lives of children. "These ten exceptional volunteers from across our company are among the thousands of AOL-Time Warner employees who donate their time and skills to assist others around the globe," said Steve Case, chairman of AOL-Time Warner. "We are proud of the work they do every day in their communities to help us fulfill our mission of becoming the most respected and valued company in the world." "While this is the 20th year we've honored our employees for their volunteer achievements, I never cease to be amazed by the capacity of their compassion and generosity," said Jerry Levin, chief executive officer of AOL-Time Warner. "The individuals we honor today share a remarkable legacy, and are living symbols of our continuing commitment to strengthen the communities in which we live and work." "I'm so honored that AOL-Time Warner, through this award, recognizes and supports the profound influence that the arts have on children," said Christie, adding, "I feel so fortunate that something I love -- the Arts -- can be such a positive force in the lives of children. My time with Free Arts has been such a joy that it doesn't feel like work at all." In addition to the Andrew Heiskell Award scroll, winners receive a personal gift of $2000, and a $3000 donation to their charity of choice. Christie is donating the $3,000 to the Free Arts for Abused Children in New York city. The awards are named for Andrew Heiskell, who is recognized for his record of community service and philanthropy during his 43-year career at Time Inc, from founding the National Urban Coalition and serving as its co-chairman from 1967 until 1979 to his key role in the restoration of Bryant Park in 1995. He has been recognized for his leadership in numerous ways, including having the New York Library for the Blind named for him. AOL-Time Warner is probably the most powerful Internet-powered media and communications company, whose industry-leading businesses include interactive services, cable systems, publishing, music, networks and filmed entertainment. The AOL-Time Warner Foundation, based in New York City and Dulles, Va., says it seeks to use the power of media, communications and information technology to serve the public interest and strengthen society. Teen People claims to be the first pop culture magazine for guys and girls that focuses on stars, style and substance. Launched in January 1998 with a guaranteed circulation of 500,000, Teen People increased its circulation to 1.6 million with its February 2001 issue. In May 2001, Teen People received the National Magazine Award for General Excellence. |
