Major unions threaten all-India strike

All the major central trade unions are planning to call an all-India strike to protest the liberalisation policies of the government.

Chittabrata Majumdar, secretary of the West Bengal unit of CITU, said that the decision for the strike would be taken after the central TU leaders arrives in the country after attending the ongoing International Labour Organisation meet in Geneva.

He said that the central trade unions, including BMS and Intuc, have chalked out a common agenda, on the basis of which an agitation programme has been prepared.

The CITU leader said that on July 6, all the central trade unions would attend a convention in Delhi, and then march towards Parliament on July 24.

The five points of the agitation would be: protest against selling of profitable and potentially-viable PSUs, unwanted withdrawal of QRs, changes in labour laws which were not in favour of workers, rising unemployment, and comprehensive laws for agricultaural workers.
