Enron judicial probe in due course: Deshmukh

Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said on Wednesday that the question of instituting a judicial inquiry into the agreement with US energy major Enron would be decided by the ruling Democratic Front Co-ordination Committee in "due course."

"The Enron review committee, headed by Madhav Godbole had only stated that a judicial inquiry into the agreement be ordered in due course," Deshmukh told a post-cabinet news conference in Bombay when his attention was drawn to the growing demand from Democratic Front allies for such a probe.

Even, the Nationalist Congress Party, one of the main constituents of the DF, had recently clarified that it was not averse to the judicial inquiry if a decision was taken by the cabinet.

Asked about Congress' stance over the issue, Deshmukh, who has been authorised by the party high command to take a decision, said, "I will spell out my stance at the co-ordination committee meeting only."

The co-ordination committee has not met since May 27. The chief minister said that the meeting would be convened after Deputy Chief Minister, Chhagan Bhujbal, returns from his trip abroad.

To a query about suggestion by lenders of Dabhol Power Company that the project be closed for one year to facilitate renegotiations to bring down the power tariff, Deshmukh said he was yet to hear such a proposal.
