Powergrid report on DPC power soon

PowerGrid Corporation will soon submit a report to the government on the possibilities of evacuating power from the Dabhol project to the power-deficient states.

Sources said that the Central Electricty Authority also had completed its first round of consultations with the states to find out their requirement and the tariff acceptable to them.

They added that the states have informed CEA that they would give their opinion on the issue by the end of this week. Power ministry officials said that Powergrid's report along with the CEA's findings would be considered for concretising a composite plan for sale of power from Dabhol to the states.

The electricity peak demand and shortfall situation in the first two months of 2001-02 suggests that various states, including Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, would be willing to buy power from the Dabhol project.

Sources said that if the tariff level was brought down to Rs 3 per unit, these states along with Maharashtra would certainly explore the possibility of bridging their gap between the peak demand and supply of electricity from Dabhol power.

According to CEA figures, Gujarat witnessed a shortage of 15.4 per cent (1,198 mw) from the peak demand of 7,796 mw during April-May this year. Similarly, Madhya Pradesh had a shortfall of 25.6 per cent (1,214 mw) from the peak demand of 4,751 mw during the period.

Maharashtra power supply during the peak period in April-May 2001 was 9.1 per cent (1,041 mw) short of the 11,463 mw required. Delhi has also expressed its willingness to buy power from Dabhol at Rs 3 per unit.

The state's peak demand shortage during the first two months this fiscal was 7.5 per cent (224 mw).
