Telco says launches CNG-powered IndicaIndia's largest truck and bus maker Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company Ltd said on Wednesday it has begun selling a compressed natural gas-powered version of its Indica hatchback. The air-conditioned model will cost Rs 349,000 ($7,400) while the standard model Rs 329,000, the company said in a statement. Indica, the country's first indigenously developed car, was launched in 1999. Sales, which thus far have failed to reach the breakeven level, were originally restricted by the fact Telco produced only a diesel version. Some analysts say that this hurt sales as diesel is viewed as a "dirty fuel" by environmentally minded Indian car buyers. In an effort to appeal to such buyers, Telco has begun producing gas-powered and now CNG-powered versions. Telco's shares closed up 0.78 per cent at Rs 71 while the Bombay benchmark index closed down 1.41 per cent.
