Sonia urges govt to protect UTI investors

Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday expressed her serious concern over the freeze on UTI scheme US-64 and requested the government to take immediate steps to ensure that the interests of small investors are not only fully protected but also enhanced.

In a letter to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, expressing her anguish and concern over the development, Gandhi said, "I strongly urge the government to carry out a thorough investigation into the management of the US-64 to ensure that the interests of small investors are not only fully protected but also enhanced."

"This is not a partisan issue but a national imperative that affects the lives of so many," the leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha said, adding, it was extremely disturbing to see that, for the second time in three years, US-64 has created a crisis of confidence and betrayed the trust of ordinary investors.

"The entire episode," she said, "is a damaging indictment of the government's management of the economy," and added millions of senior citizens, pensioners, ex-servicemen and salaried professionals have put their hard-earned savings into this scheme and "I hope that they will now see credible and effective action to restore their trust".
