India, Mauritius keen to strengthen trade tiesIndia and Mauritius on Tuesday jointly called on the international community to intensify its efforts to combat terrorism, fundamentalism and drug trafficking and agreed to reinforce bilateral co-operation in this area. Announcing the joint declaration at a press conference, Sir Jugnauth stressed the need to strengthen the bilateral relations between both the nations, particularly in the areas of information technology, defence, electronic component manufacturing, textiles, pharmaceutical, export trade and ocean exploration. Reiterating Mauritius' strong support for India's claim for a permanent seat on a reformed Security Council of United Nations, a joint declaration issued by Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and visiting Mauritius Prime Minister Sir Anerood Jugnauth, expressed their conviction that tension in the region should be resolved by peaceful means. Both the prime ministers reaffirmed their commitment to promote peace and stability in the region. They also called for the restoration of democracy in Fiji and reiterated their belief in the resolution of the ethnic problem through democratic measures. The Mauritius prime minister who held high-level meetings with the Indian President, prime minister and other Cabinet ministers in Delhi since his arrival on January 15, visited Bangalore, Hyderabad, Madras and Bombay, before leaving for Mauritius. His wife Lady Sarojini Jugnauth accompanied him. He said that the Indian government has agreed to depute a high qualified scientist to head the Mauritius Oceanography Institute and also extend all possible help in making operational the proposed Mauritius University of Technology in order to develop human resources for IT sector in Mauritius. Mauritius is seeking IT expertise from India and many it majors in India have assured the visiting prime minister to set up their shops in Mauritius. Bangalore-based Infosys Technologies has expressed its desire to set up a software development centre in Mauritius and sought allotment of 50 acre of land from the Mauritius government. Mauritius government is setting up a cyber city, and the Indian government has extended a line of credit of $100 million to fund the supply of computer equipment, software, resource persons and related infrastructural equipment from India. India also agreed to consider positively additional fresh line of credit to Mauritius subject modalities being jointly agreed for the projects to be implemented in future. In the field of air transport, Sir Jugnauth said that his government has urged the Indian government for providing terminal rights to both Air Mauritius and Air-India to enable them to operate their flights through Bombay, Delhi and Madras without intra-India landing rights. Both the prime ministers have agreed to expand co-operation and reiterated their strong commitment to expanding co-operation in the financial sector and agreed on the relevance of existing instruments to strengthen this co-operation.
