SEBI to re-examine short sales definition

Stock market regulator SEBI plans to re-examine the definition of short sales with a view toward reducing market volatility, a domestic daily said on Wednesday.

The report in an economic daily quoted D C Anjaria, head of a panel looking into the impact of short sales on price volatility.

Anjara said the committee will look into certain periods which exhibited high volatility and study the top 10 most actively traded stocks to examine the impact of short sales on volatility, the report said.

The current definition of short sales is shares sold but not delivered. However this does not take into account instances where delivery takes place by borrowing securities, the report said.
