Huawei given clean chit by Karnataka IT department

Karnataka IT department on Friday gave a clean chit to Huawei Technologies, a Chinese telecom company that had been embroiled in a controversy for reportedly helping the Taliban regime and Pakistan in upgrading their telecom surveillance network.

"Prima facie, there is no case against the company. They are doing their job", Karnataka IT Secretary Vivek Kulkarni told reporters after executives of the company, which has set up its shop in Bangalore in 1999 gave a detailed report about its activities.

The state IT department chief said the company executives had given all details regarding their operations, projects and list of clients and "what they are doing here". They had briefed the external affairs ministry officials also.

To a pointed query if he gave a clean chit to the company, Kulkarni replied in the affirmative.

Huawei Technologies has an research and development centre in Bangalore.

The company was in the eye of a storm following media reports about its help to the Taliban regime but it had dismissed them as "baseless", saying it would never associate itself with any unlawful regime.
