Godbole report to be ready by Friday

The final draft of proposals by state government-appointed Godbole Committee for renegotiating the power purchase agreement with Enron-promoted Dabhol Power Company would be ready by Friday, committee chairman Madhav Godbole said on Thursday.

Talking to newsmen at the end of the first session of the two-day meeting in Bombay, Godbole said that the committee would finalise its draft proposals after Friday's concluding meeting and submit the final report to the government in a few days. The former bureaucrat, however, declined to share details of the report.

Replying to a question, he said that the committee had not discussed the issue of recent statements by Tata Power showing interest in buying the project. The issue did not figure in the committee's meeting and it is upto the financial institutions and the Maharashtra State Electricity Board to look into it, Godbole said.

Meanwhile, highly placed sources in MSEB further said that there was no concrete proposal so far from the power major in this connection.

''We read in the press about their interest and no concrete proposal has been received so far,'' the sources said.

Godbole ruled out the possibility of committee's interaction with the financial institutions before finalising the draft proposals.

The committee members comprising state energy secretary V M Lal, administrative college in-charge E S A Sarma, central government nominee A V Gokak and MSEB chairman Vinay Bansal attended Thursday's meeting. State finance secretary S K Srivastava could not attend the meeting, the sources said.

Interestingly, the high level committee led by Industrial Development Bank of India comprising Indian financial institutions, state and central government was scheduled to meet Thursday.

MSEB chairman Vinay Bansal and state energy secretary V M Lal are expected to attend on behalf of MSEB and the state government respectively, while Gokak, who is in Bombay, is likely to attend the meeting on behalf of central government, the sources in the IFIs said.
