Dr Reddy's launches India's first breast cancer helpline |
Dr Reddy's Laboratories Ltd launched India's first breast cancer helpline in Ahmedabad today (August 25, 2001) in association with the Gujarat Cancer Research Institute (GCRI) and the Gujarat Cancer Society (GCS). Dr Maya Kotnani and Amrish Patel, Hon'ble members of the Legislative Assembly of Gujarat, inaugurated the helpline.
The helpline is aimed at creating awareness about breast cancer and encouraging women to come forward for regular check ups. This would facilitate an early detection of the disease and thus significantly increase the chances of cure.
The helpline has been established at the Oncology Community Center of GCRI, Vaasna, Ahmedabad. The community center has a dedicated team of oncologists who will be providing free medical counsel and advise through the helpline. Any person across Gujarat, having queries on the causes, prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer can call up the helpline at 9825000922.
Speaking on the occasion, L G Murali General Manager, Marketing, Dr Reddy's Laboratories, said, "Our company will be taking up various initiatives through the helpline to reachout to the masses. We will be organizing a day camp for breast cancer awareness at the community center at which mammography testing, one of the key investigations for diagnosis of the disease will be offered at substantially subsidised rates. Patient care booklets, both in English and Gujarati will be distributed free to all patients calling on the helpline."
Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies and the frequent cause of cancer related death among women. It accounts for 11% of the total cancer-related diseases in India and is largely prevalent among urban women. This is on account of nulliparity, stress and the increased tendency for late marriage.
Dr Reddy's will be launching an advertising campaign throughout Gujarat to create awareness about the helpline. The Company will also distribute and display pamphlets, which pictorially explain the self test method for detection of the disease, in public places such as hospitals, women's colleges, beauty parlours, super stores and corporate houses.
Dr.Reddy's intends to take the helpline national by launchings similar helplines in other states. This helpline is one of the various initiatives taken by the company to increase health awareness. Another important initiative is the tie-up with the Cancer patients Aid Association (CPAA) through which three per cent of all sales of Docetere are contributed to the CPAA. Docetere (generic name Docetaxel) is a leading brand of Dr.Reddy's and is used in the treatment of metastatic breast cancer.
These initiatives are part of the company's efforts to realise its vision of "helping people lead healthier lives."
Dr. D.D.Patel, Director, GCRI, Dr. P.M. Shah, Additional Directors, GCRI were among the others who were present at the launch ever.
