Godbole panel to submit report in 2-3 weeks

The Godbole Committee, set up to renegotiate the power purchase agreement between MSEB and Enron-promoted Dabhol Power Company, will finalise and submit its report to Maharashtra government in the next two to three weeks.

"We are currently discussing the parameters of the report and it will take another two to three weeks to finalise it before submitting to state government," committee chairman Madhav Godbole told reporters after a two-hour meeting of the panel in Bombay on Friday.

Referring to Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh's request not to wind up the panel, which was conveyed by state energy secretary V M Lal, he said: "We are considering it and a final view in this regard will be taken in the next few days."

On August 15, Deshmukh, after the ruling Democratic Front co-ordination committee meeting, had said that he would request the panel to carry on its renegotiation process because even if Enron pulls out of the project, the panel's recommendations were needed by the government.

"The panel would meet again on Saturday to continue with the discussion but +it may not finalise the report," Godbole said.

Asked if any communication had come from Enron, the former home secretary said they have already conveyed that foreign shareholders have indicated their desire to exit from the project.
