Verma 'abused' his official position: Sinha

Verma 'abused' his official position: Sinha Former chairman of Central Board of Excise and Customs B P Verma, arrested by CBI on corruption charges, had "abused his official position and showed favour" to a private company of Madras, Parliament was informed on Thursday.

Making a statement in both Houses of Parliament, Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha said Verma has also been found to possess assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

He said a case against Verma was registered by CBI on March 30 for "abusing" his official position and favouring A K Enterprises, Madras, which allegedly exported rags, declared as garments.

Sinha said Verma influenced his subordinate officers to enable the firm to draw false duty drawbacks and for this purpose, he obtained "gratification and considerations through his son".

The Minister said consequent on the registration of the case, searches were conducted at the official as well as residential premises of Verma on March 31.

CBI has reported that during the course of the searches, several "incriminating" documents were seized. Scrutiny of these revealed that Verma is in possession of assets in his own name, in the name of his family members, as well as benami, which are prima facie disproportionate to his known sources of income, he said.
