The Financial Express, (eFe Bureau), August 24, 2000

The recently released youth segment of the Netmonitor survey conducted by ORG-Marg, reveals that Indian youth identify Yahoo and Rediff as the top two sites overall, but have specific preferences for various other categories.

For music it is MTV.com, for films it is Filmfare.com and for games, it is Indiagames.com.Indiatimes is the youth destination for news according to the survey.

These are some of the findings of the survey conducted among Indian Internet users aged between 12 and 22 in eight major metros in June this year.

The sample size for the Netmonitor survey was 24,848 individuals. Sixty per cent of the people surveyed were found to have started using the Net within the last one year. The youth however form the single largest segment of the Net population in India, and were found to access the Net about nine times a week.

Job sites and cricket sites appear to have a staunchly loyal following among young visitors according to the survey.

On a scale of one (not at all likely to revisit the site) to three (very likely to revisit the site), Jobsahead.com and Naukri.com received a score of three. Thatscricket.com and cricket.org also scored high on the revisit parameter.

The Net was found to be used mostly for communication among the surveyed audience, mostly in the form of e-mail, chatting or instant messaging.

Almost all the Internet using youth were found to use e-mail about three to four times a week on an average. The survey found that about 40 per cent send and receive mail every day, and 25 per cent every alternate day.

75 per cent of the youth Netizens had 'chatted' at least once in the past one month.

The other popular activities on the Net were identified as collecting educational information (53 per cent) and sending greetings (52 per cent).

Surprisingly online gaming was not as popular as one would expect, according to the survey, Only 36 per cent of the target audience played online games and on an average just about twice a week.

Only 18 per cent actually downloaded games from the Net. Also, just 34 per cent were found to download music from the Net.
