The Asian Age, (Correspondent) May 1, 1999
Launched in 1978, Chip was Germany's first computer magazine and the second
oldest in the world after Byte. A full colour monthly computer magazine,Chip was
launched in India in April 1998 by Jasubhai Digital Media. The purpose of
Chip-India is to make computers more interesting, efficient and enjoyable for users
and to reveal a fascinating world to those who are as yet unfamiliar with the world of
computers.
The magazine's circulation grew rapidly, establishing it as the country's bestselling
computer magazine, with a circulation of over 80,000 copies and a reach spanning
175 cities.
To celebrate its first anniversary, Chip gave away the Chip Web Awards in Mumbai
earlier this month. Twenty-five Indian Web-sites were awarded in recognition of the
efforts, skills and imagination of the web developers; and are the first of its kind in
India. The awards were given away by Mr. Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner, founder
of Opera Software. With these awards Chip hopes to provide an incentive to web
developers to ensure the quality of the indigenous content on the Internet.
The awardees were shortlisted from a list of around 50 websites out of which 25
were finally selected on the basis of their aesthetic content, imaginative and intuitive
design, utility and use of technology.
Awardees include www.indiabookshop.com(Annet Communications);www.nseindia.com(DBSInternet);www.rediff.com (Rediff on the Net);www.indiasite.com (Webmasters India); and www.yashrajfilms.com.
