Love story: 'I ruined his coffee!'

Veeran and Sunita

We invited readers to share stories of how they met their spouses and interesting anecdotes about their wedding day. Here's Sunita's account of meeting her husband:

My parents were searching for a suitable match for me and along came one. The boy in the photo was so innocent that I didn't even have a second thought. I said, "He's okay."

Within a week his parents came to see me, but as he was in Ireland, they said he would visit only after five months. My parents were reluctant to wait for so long and they didn't want me to have to go that far.

Anyway, I was supposed to send him an e-mail with my photos, which I did and he added me to his chat. On Diwali night, I was working a night shift but as there was not much to do, I logged onto my e-mail. I saw him online and hoped that he would say hi, because I did did not have the courage to start a conversation. And he said HI!!!!!!!!!

We started talking and chatted for nine hours continuously and for days after that. But we never spoke to each other on the phone -- I was very very shy and didn't feel like I could. I said I would wait for five months.

Then he finally arrived in India and the next day came to my house. I was wearing a sari and didn't feel good at all. He came, he saw me. There were chips, biscuits, upma and bananas on the table. In traditional style, I came in with the tea. I was shivering, the tray, the cups everything was shaking. I didn't dare look at him even once.

Finally we had to talk, so he started by asking me who made the snacks. I said Mom. He then asked who made the tea, I said Mom. Then he asked, "If Mom did everything, what were you doing?" I was about to cry, but I was also really angry. I said, "I was getting ready!" Then he said okay, can you make some coffee?

My mom told me that I should not have spoken the way I did and that he would not marry me after that. I was crying, kind of blinded -- I didn't know what I was doing when I was preparing the coffee. Finally I came in with it, but I had put in four spoons of sugar instead of two! I was sure then, that he would never marry me. Why would anybody want to marry a girl who can't even make coffee? But then he said, "The coffee is too sweet -- just like the girl."

It's been one year since we got married, but it seems like yesterday.
