We invited readers to share stories of how they met their spouses and interesting anecdotes about their wedding day. Meenu Gupta shares her story
The beginning of our love story dates back to our school days (1998-1999 to be precise) and it took us almost 10 yrs to come to a 'happy ending'.
It all began thus:
We knew each other from childhood (studied in same school, lived in same locality and shared some "Bachpan" ke Kodak moments together).
By the time we were in the tenth grade we became the best buddies. And it wasn't until June of 2000, when Sumit realised that we were more than 'just friends'.
His letter proposing to me didn't came as a shock to me at all! But being a Rajput girl from a conservative family, love marriage seemed a distant dream and inter-caste marriage was a big no-no.
So I humbly told him that we would always be best friends.
Time passed, and I shifted to Varanasi after completing twelfth grade and he moved to Mumbai to pursue his Engineering.
Throughout, we were in touch.
We had our share of ups and downs in our relationship and finally by January 2005, we decided to change the status of our Orkut profile from 'Single' to 'Committed'.
We finally got a chance to see each other in June 2005, when I visited Delhi for my Banasthali entrance exam and he came back after finishing his Engineering, after almost 3.5yrs (1212 days to be precise).
Since then our relationship has grown exponentially by the day.
We never missed any chance of meeting each other. Be it while planning for my NCFM exams to coincide with his Delhi visits or he coming to Jaipur along with me.
It has been truly said that when you really want something, the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.
On October 12, 2007, I told about my feelings to my mom. She was calm but as soon as this news reached my dad, my worst nightmare became a reality.
I faced everything from his yelling to 'emotional atyaachaar' but my mom and my siblings supported me.
There was no further discussion regarding Sumit with dad. My dad was visiting my brother and me in Delhi in November 2007 and I was mentally prepared myself to face him.
To my surprise, My dad simply said that he had given a thought about it and he is fine with me getting married to Sumit as he was a nice guy and would keep me happy.
So November 28, 2007 became the happiest day of my life. And just like a page out of a fairy tale, the storybook romance came true!
