Have a query regarding health insurance or mediclaim policy? Maybe we can help.

Drop us a line and our expert, Harsh Roongta, CEO of Apnapaisa.com, will answer it.

Please write to us at getahead@rediff.co.in with the subject line as: Health insurance query.

Kindly guide me for the following two health insurance related queries:

1. I am 29-year-old female but I have hypothyroid (which is under control). I would like to have a health insurance policy that also covers routine check ups besides any emergency. Kindly suggest.

2. My mother is 69-year-old but completely healthy and dynamic. I wish to obtain a health insurance policy for her too.

Harsh: You have been diagnosed with hypothyroid. It will be treated as pre-existing disease while taking a health insurance plan. The pre-existing disease will be covered after a few specified number of years which ranges from 2 to 4 years depending on policy to policy.

Please note here that there are a few policies that will cover you for the regular OPD expenses but these are very costly policies compared to a regular mediclaim policy.

Also these expenses are covered up to a certain limit only and only after a certain waiting period. So we would recommend you to go for a regular mediclaim policy but you won't get reimbursement of your regular checkups.

If you want to take a policy that cover regular checkups (OPD) you can take a look at Apollo Munich: Maxima Health, ICICI Lombard: Health Advantage Plus.

Below are a few plans which you may consider while buying a policy:

Could you suggest a mediclaim policy for my mother who is 61-year-old? She is healthy and I would like to know of the various policies for senior citizens.

Harsh: You can look at the mediclaim plan applicable to your mother's age in the table below:

One of my relative is born with genetic disease called 'sickle cells anaemia'. He comes from Nilgiris district in Tamil Nadu. I heard that there is no insurance or mediclaim policy favouring this disease.

Can you suggest me the right policy for this?

Harsh: We would strongly recommend you to take a health insurance plan for your family over and above the group mediclaim policy offered by your company. The reasons are also quite very much stated by you. Just to add to that, health conditions may deteriorate over a period of time. Thus it may happen that you won't get a health insurance cover at a later stage of life once you leave your current job.

It is advisable to take family individual plan, where each family member is covered individually for the stated sum insured.

Following is the premium chart for sum insured Rs 3 lakh each for your family members (Self and spouse) assuming your wife is 34 years of age.

I am aged 45, my wife is 44, my elder son is 15 and my younger son is 11.

So far I have not bought any mediclaim policies. I am interested to buy one. Kindly guide me to go for the best. As on the date we do not have any identified health problems.

Harsh: Considering the age factor of your family member it would be advisable to take family individual plan, where each family member is covered individually for the stated sum insured.

Following is the premium chart for sum insured Rs 3 lakh each for your family members. The total sum assured for the family is Rs 12 lakh.

I was born July 11, 1971 and need to take an individual mediclaim policy. Can you please advice? If I take it for my entire family (wife and a 6-year-old daughter) then what is the plan. Which plan will suit me the best? Of course, with no pre-existing diseases. I work for an IT company as a Project manager. Which insurance plan will give me maximum benefit in case of hospitalisation, check up etc.?

Harsh: As age is on your side it would be advisable to take individual plan, where each family member is covered individually for the stated sum insured.

Premium chart for sum insured for Rs 3 lakh under individual plan from various insurance companies is given in the table.

We have assumed that your wife is 37 years of age while calculating premium. Please note that the sum assured in the below mentioned table is Rs 3 lakh each which makes it a total of Rs 9 lakh for your family.
