Kareena, Mandira at Mumbai's latest chic boutique

When Spanish clothing brand Zara opened its first store in Mumbai on June 10, everyone who mattered showed up. Take a look!

It was an evening that Mumbai's fashion fraternity has been looking forward to for weeks now. Zara, the Spanish clothing brand, opened its first store in the city at the Palladium in High Street Phoenix amidst much fanfare. This comes close on the heels of the opening of its flagship store in Delhi.

The excitement in the store was palpable as the chosen few who were invited -- many of them fashion journalists from all the major magazines -- browsed through the collection picking up everything they could lay their hands on.

One swore she was burning a good part of her paycheque as she pulled out her credit card. Another one grumpily checked out the men's section, hating the fact that now everyone he knew would have a piece of Zara!

Kareena Kapoor, who was at the launch too, echoed the same sentiment, but she sounded rather cheerful about it. "For years we had to shop for Zara clothes abroad. It's great to have a store in my city," she said, responding to the usual retinue of questions.

Predictably, she was wearing a piece from Zara.

The men's section that occupies a corner of the 1,500 square metre store, however, saw very little action. Guys apparently don't shop here a lot. Besides the regular collection of jeans, trousers and tees, their latest military collection seemed rather interesting.

I tried a pair of sexy brown cargos -- the kinds that Brad Pitt and co wore in Inglourious Basterds -- baggy at the top and snugly fitting at the bottom. The World War look was pretty cool in the film and I was seriously considering buying these as I tried them on. One look at myself in the mirror, however, and I promptly returned them to the attendant waiting outside the fitting rooms.

Model Viveka Babajee, who we're told swears by retail therapy, showed up in this sexy black strappy number.

And speaking of straps, Mandira Bedi gave hers a pass and opted for this bright figure-hugging dress instead.
