Biofashion: Fruits 'n' veggies on the ramp!

Every year, the Colombian city of Cali hosts a 'biofashion' show featuring environmentally-friendly creations made from fruit, leaves, flowers etc. The aim is to promote eco awareness and allow designers to let loose their creativity.

And these aren't just regular clothes with a few fruits and branches stitched on for effect -- even shoes made from twigs and flowers are displayed! We take a look at the 2010 instalment, plus some desi outfits closer to home that have followed the same principle in recent years.

Seen here is a sexy suit of dried roses, woven bark and leaves.

Next we have this leafy ensemble, complete with coconut bikini and leafy skirt.

A model poses in a massive headgear made of leaves and worn over a one-piece dress that incorporates straw, leaves and lemons.

Note how the intricate weaves of this number serve to highlight the glossy foliage, teamed with a few brightly-coloured posies for good measure.

Cali is not the only place to have seen some biofashion action. In fact, Indian designer Soma Chatterjee created similar outfits for a Kolkata hotel's vegetarian food festival a few years ago, which was promoted by models strutting around in outfits like you see here.

And to add to this particular Kolkata affair were male models in spicy creations!

Shifting from Kolkata to New Delhi, here we see an ensemble from an animal rights group to promote vegetarianism and to discourage fashion enthusiasts from consuming meat. It certainly looks like it covers all the nutrients you need!

Another one for the animals. This tantalising morsel marked Global Meat Out Day in New Delhi, back in 2001.

And finally, pineapples and sugarcane were put to good use in a photo-op on the same day, featuring Indian models this time around.
