In today's smartphone market, the technology behind the device is as important as its looks. And nothing contributes to that better than the display. Smartphones are now shipping with 5-inch displays and 1080p resolutions, packing in more pixels with every inch. There has been much debate about whether it is all that necessary. But no one can deny that the results are extraordinary.
Not all devices need 1080p screens -- some of them have superior technology to make up for it.
Today, we look at the top 10 smartphone displays, which include quite a few premium handsets. There is a great display no matter which platform you choose to take up. So even those interested in Window Phone 8 or iOS have much to look forward to.
Samsung Galaxy S4

Samsung's latest smartphone features a 5-inch, 1080p display like many of the premium devices these days.
That means a 1920x1080 resolution with 16 million colours with a pixel density of 441 pixels per-inch. It features Samsung's own Super AMOLED technology that makes for bright colours and a high amount of contrast. Unlike previous Galaxy phones, the saturation is toned down, allowing for a more realistic picture.
It also features Gorilla Glass 3 coating the screen.
Sony Xperia Z
Price: Rs 37,999
Sony's new flagship Xperia Z takes advantage of the company's propriety BRAVIA Engine 2, the same image-processing unit found in its televisions.
This allows for deep shades of black and a balance between saturation, contrast, colour and brightness. The display also utilises Opticontrast technology, measuring 5 inches with a 1920x1080 resolution that is water resistant and supports up to 10-finger touch input.
It has a pixel density of 441 pixels per-inch. The glass on the display is also touted as being both scratch resistant and shatterproof, which protects it from dropping.

HTC One

The HTC One uses the company's Super LCD3 technology.
Super LCD technology is defined by the lack of an air gap between the glass and display, which makes the picture appear "closer" and more life-like to the user.
It also reduces glare and power consumption.
The HTC One features a 4.7-inch display with a 1920x1080 resolution. The overall pixel density of the device is 468 pixels per-inch, giving it the sharpest display among all the current generation smartphones.
It is coated Gorilla Glass 2, which helps it maintain a slim profile and provides resistance against scratches.

Nokia Lumia 920

For the latest version of Lumia, that runs Windows Phone 8 OS, Nokia introduced its PureMotion HD+ touchscreen.
It measures 4.5-inches and comes with a 1280x720 resolution. It packs a pixel density of 332 pixels per-inch and features an RGB Stripe for effective colour blending. Its brightness measures 600 NITS, which prevents glare, and features the deepest shades of black.
Best of all, despite the high brightness, it doesn't consume too much power. The Gorilla Glass coating the screen is quite tough, able to hammer nails into wooden boards without taking a scratch.

Samsung Galaxy S3

Despite Samsung Galaxy S4 featuring a higher resolution and sharper picture, the Samsung Galaxy S3's Super AMOLED display still looks good.
It measures 4.8-inch with a 1280x720 resolution. An RGB Matrix with PenTile technology doesn't interfere with the sharpness of text, and the saturation is subtler than with the Galaxy S2's display.
It features a pixel density of 306 pixels per-inch.
While the screen doesn't feature Gorilla Glass like most premium displays it is still highly resistant to dust and scratches.

LG's own True HD IPS LCD technology utilises the same zero-gap feature as HTC's Super LCD.
This means no air gap between the glass and display, allowing for a more lifelike image.
It features a 1280x768 resolution and 4.7-inch display with a pixel density 318 pixels per-inch.
The brightness is measured at 470 NITS, but doesn't compromise on the overall battery life of the device thanks to the CPU.

It features IPS technology, which means strong brightness levels and viewing angles. The display itself measures 4.7-inch and has a 1280x768 resolution.
The pixel density is 316 pixels per inch, which makes for a crisp picture.
It takes advantage of zero-gap technology, removing the air between the display and glass, so as to create a closer picture. The display is coated in Gorilla Glass 2 that provides scratch resistance.
