PIX: 27 phones and tablets launched in India in June

In June, handset and tablet manufactures launched 28 devices for Indian consumers. Out of which 21 were smartphones, four were tablets and two were feature phones.

The 21 smartphones that were launched last month both from MNC brands and Indian brands were in the range of Rs 5,000 and Rs 1.5 lakh.

The major trend we witnessed was that new smartphones outnumbered feature phones.

The reason behind this might be that MNC brands like Sony, Motorola and HTC have already said that they will exit the feature phone business and concentrate only on smartphones. But the surprising part is that even homegrown brands are no longer focusing on the feature phone segment. In the month of May, eight feature phones were announced and this number came down to just two in June.

There is a possibility that a few more feature phones might have been launched in the market but the company didn't issue any statement regarding the devices, and as a result we have not featured them in our list.

Also, basic smartphones are available in the market at the same price as features phones and moreover the first time buyers' market is fast shrinking and most customers are looking at upgrades and therefore low end feature phones also face a shrinking market.

Nokia's Pureview was probably the most talked about new launch of June and the sole reason for that was the whopping 41 megapixel camera that this smartphone comes with.

The phone was result of two years of hard work from Nokia and Carl Zeiss. The phone's camera is coupled with a Xenon flash and comes with camera like f/2.8 aperture and promises to capture 7728x5354 resolution images in 16:9 formats along with full HD videos in 30 frames per second. By far this is the maximum ever number of megapixels or resolution ever to be supported by any smartphone.

Other than that the phone gets good but nothing outstanding specifications including a single-core 1.3 GHz mobile processor along with 512 MB RAM. It is based on the Nokia Belle operating system and comes with 16 GB on-board storage with support up to 64 GB micro SD card.

Nokia 808 PureView features a 4-inch Amoled clear black display with 640x360 pixel resolution and has been built using corning gorilla glass technology for more strength.

The phone is priced at Rs 32,000.

HTC India introduced a new mid-range smartphone -- Desire C with Beats Audio technology. The new HTC Desire C has a 3.5-inch touchscreen display and is powered by 600 MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon mobile processor. Running the new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with Sense 4.0 User Interface, the Desire C smartphone is available for Rs 14,999.

Flaunting a metallic frame the HTC Desire C measures 12.5 mm and weighs mere 100 grams. Appearing as a stubby version of the current HTC One S or One X, it has used 480x320 pixel resolution support which adds up to its con.

Under the hood, this smartphone runs Sense 4.0 user interface layered on top of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. At the back lies a 5 megapixel camera with LED Flash and geo-tagging support. There is no secondary camera in the front.

HTC, also brought its first dual SIM smartphone last month in the form of the HTC Desire V.

The phone is a dual SIM (GSM+GSM) mode based Android smartphone. The Desire V supports 3G on the primary SIM slot, while the secondary one supports EDGE and GPRS connectivity. The HTC Desire V sports a 4-inch WVGA resolution based display running 1GHz Cortex-A5 processor coupled with Adreno 200 graphics and a 512 MB of RAM.

The smartphone features a 5 megapixel, primary autofocus camera with LED flash and VGA recording, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, 4 GB storage and a 32 GB expandable memory.

The device features Android's latest operating system, the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which is accented with HTC's latest Sense 4.0 user interface. The device also has Beats Audio enhancements for superior music quality and sound.

The phone is priced at Rs 21,000.

HTC One S

HTC completed the troika of One series with the launched One S in the Indian market priced at Rs 33,500. The phone comes with a 4.3-inch Amoled display which has a 540x960 resolution. It weighs just 119.5 grams.

The One S comes with Android 4.0 operating system with HTC Sense 4 user interface. It has 16 GB internal memory storage with 1 GB RAM. Additionally, HTC is offering 25 GB of Dropbox (cloud) storage for two years.

Like One X, it comes with 3.5 mm jack, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, DLNA, and a USB port for connectivity. There is an 8 megapixel autofocus camera with LED Flash in One S. The rear camera is capable of capturing 1080 pixel based true HD videos. There is a front VGA camera too for video chats.

The month was an important one for Motorola, which recently became part of Google. It launched the big battery version of its flagship Motorola Razr called Razr Maxx.

Razr Maxx is priced at Rs 31,590, the phone is selling with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) but the Android ICS 4.0 update is already available. The phone is not just stylish but is also sturdy with Kevlar body and Gorilla Glass.

Motorola Razr Maxx comes with longest battery life with a 3300 mAh battery and yet is super slim at 8.99mm thickness. The phone comes with a 4.3-inch Super Amoled Advanced display.

Motorola Razr Maxx comes with 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and front-facing HD video camera. Motorola has also used government-grade encryption that protects your e-mail, contacts and calendar.

Under the Kevlar built chassis lies a dual-core 1.2 GHz mobile processor coupled with 1 GB RAM and 16 GB memory.

The low cost tough phone from Motorola has been priced at Rs 11,490. The new Defy Mini is IP67 standard certified and comes with a water-resistant, scratch resistant and even dust proof design. Featuring a 3.2-inch touchscreen display with 320x480 pixel resolution, the Defy Mini has the panel made using Corning Gorilla Glass technology to provide enough strength to it.

Under the chassis lies an under-clocked 600 MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 MSM7225A mobile processor with 512 MB RAM and 512 MB ROM out of which only 120 MB is accessible to the user. While Motorola has included a 2 GB memory card with the phone, one can add up to 32 GB memory card to it.

Motorola Defy XT

As the successor of the Defy+, the new Defy XT comes with IP67 Standard certification for being water resistant, scratch resistant and dust proof. The Defy XT features a 3.7-inch touchscreen display supporting 480x854 pixel resolution and constructed using the Corning Gorilla Glass technology for strength.

Under the hood lies a single core 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 MSM7227A mobile processor with 512 MB RAM and 1 GB ROM. At the back lies 5 megapixel cameras with auto focus as well as flash and there as front facing VGA camera for video chat.

Even this smartphone will have 2 GB micro SD card include while one can add up to 32 GB memory card to it. The Defy XT runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and features the MotoSwitch 2.0 user interface.

LG launched the successor of the famous Optimus 3D with 3D Max. LG Optimus 3D Max is Android 2.3-based smartphone with a 4.3-inch screen with WVGA resolution and Nova display. It is powered by 1.2 Ghz OMAP4430 processor and has 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot, two 5 megapixel cameras, and a 1,520 mAh battery.

LG has also customised some of the software on the phone to take complete advantage of the glasses-less 3D capability. The 3D Converter takes 2D content of any available media (videos, pictures, games) and converts them to 3D for your viewing pleasure. A 3D video editor is also included, allowing you to edit your video footage in 3D in real-time, and a 3D Hot Key allows you to quickly switch between 2D and 3D views.

LG Optimus 3D Max is available for Rs30,500.

LG also launched its new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich running smartphone Optimus L7, which is the flagship phone of its L series of phones.

The LG Optimus L7 has a 4.3-inch display that supports WVGA (480x800) pixel resolution and comes with a 5-megapixel camera with LED Flash at the back and a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera.

With mere 8.7 mm slim body, the LG Optimus L7 houses a single-core 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon mobile processor. It comes loaded with 1 GB RAM and offers 4 GB onboard storage. It would also be the first device to feature LG's Optimus UI 3.0.

It is priced at Rs 19, 900.

Samsung which had launched its flagship Galaxy SIII in May, chose to concentrate on the marketing of SIII and did not go for any big launches. However it did make available the all GSM version of its mid level Dual SIM Android phone the Galaxy Ace Duos.

A GSM+CDMA version was already available and the new GSM+GSM version was what was added. The phone priced at Rs 15,090 has similar hardware compared to what was available in the earlier version.

The Ace Duos has an 832 MHz processor and HSDPA 7.2 Mbps & Wi-Fi b/g/n connectivity. Besides, it has a 5 megapixel autofocus camera, 8.9 cm HVGA screen, Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system and a 3 GB internal memory.

Apart from the big guys, Indian brands also introduced several Android phones in the entry level categories. Biggest amongst the launches was Spice Mobility's new Stellar series. Of which the 4-inch Stellar Mi425 was the only one to be made available immediately.

Priced at Rs 10,000 the phone comes with a 4-inch screen and a 1GHz processor which makes the phone quite a value for money proposition. The phone comes with Android 2.3 but with a promise of upgrade to Android 4.0 very soon.

Mi-425 comes with 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash along with a VGA front camera for video chats. Other features include 1 GHz processor, A-GPS, social networking app, instant messenger, music player, and 32 GB expandable memory.

We were talking about features phones being priced out of the market by low cost smartphones, and this phone from Micromax is the prime example. Micromax launched its cheapest phone in the Superphone series with A 45 Punk.

The second phone to come with AISHA voice assistance application, has a 3.5-inch screen, but no 3G option and is priced at Rs 5,499.

Other specifications of the phone include Android 2.3 operating system, 650 MHz processor, 256 MB RAM, 32 GB expandable memory, and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Micromax Superfone A52

Micromax announced yet another phone with its famous AISHA voice assistant application. This Android smartphone, named Superfone A52, has powerful specification and is priced at just Rs 6,000.

The Micromax Superfone A52 is based on Android 2.3 Gingerbread and comes with a humongous 1 Ghz processor, which is quite a rarity in the sub-Rs 10,000 Android segment.

This 3.2-inch TFT touchscreen based smartphone comes with dual SIM slot and has a 2 megapixel rear camera. Besides, this 3G phone has 32 GB expandable memory, 1280 mAh battery and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Another Indian brand, iBall, jumped into the party with a large screen low cost smartphone just like Spice and MTS with a 4-inch screen totting Andi 4d.

The Andi 4d is bigger and more powerful with a 1 GHz processor, a 5 megapixel camera and a 4-inch display. This phone too comes with dual SIM facility, 3G capabilities and a front-facing camera.

It has a G-sensor, proximity sensor and a light sensor. Andi 4d costs Rs 9,490.

Andi 3e on the other hand is the entry level dual SIM phone based on Android version 2.3.5 Gingerbread. The phone has a 650 MHz processor and also features bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 3G. The phone comes with 3.2-inch capacitive touch screen, a 3.2 megapixel camera, a VGA front camera and supports 16 GB MicroSD card. The phone also has GPS support.

The iBall Andi 3e comes with, something called 'breathing light' with which the phone can be set to glow in different colours for different functions like incoming call, SMS or music. The phone is priced at Rs 6,500 only.

Celkon, a Hyderabad based mobile phone maker, also launched two Android mobile phones each with a 1 GHz processor. Celkon A95 comes with a 3.2-inch screen and is priced at Rs 5,299.

Based on Android 2.3 operating system, and comes with Mediatek chipsets. The phone gets 32 GB expandable memory and 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support.

Idea Cellular launched its 3D self branded Android phone with ID 918. The phone priced at Rs 5,994 is manufactured by Alcatel, runs on Android 2.3 and has 3.2-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen display. Besides, it features a 3.2 megapixel rear camera, 150 MB internal storage, 512 MB RAM and an expandable memory up to 32 GB via a micro SD card.

Along with the handset ID 918, Idea is also offering benefits worth Rs 2,340. And that's not all, after 48-72 hours of recharge and first call from the Idea smartphone, users will get 2 GB data per month for 3 months and post 2 GB data limit they will be charged 5 paisa per 10 KB. Users will also be able to enjoy Idea TV for 3 months when they purchase this handset.

MTS also launched a new phone with its mTag 401. The phone is priced at Rs 8,999, and also offers unlimited MTS to MTS calls for three months.

MTS MTag 401 comes with 4.0-inch capacitive touch display offering 800X480 (WVGA) pixel resolution and runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The smartphone is powered by an 800 Mhz Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 processor and comes with a 1700 mAh battery.

MTag 401 features a 3.0 megapixel camera, expandable memory slot of up to 32 GB and comes pre-bundled with a 2 GB micro SD card.

The month also saw the launch of two super expensive smartphones. The first one being the Research in Motion launching BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9981 smartphone in India.

Designed exclusively by the Porsche Design Group, the new BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9981 is available for Rs 1,39,990 from BlackBerry Premium and BlackBerry Exclusive stores.

The new BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9981 is the reincarnated BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900 but with a greater styling and design conceived by the Porsche Design Group.

The Vertu Constellation Smile is a Nokia C7 Symbian smartphone inspired device which comes with semi precious stone and metal shell. Intex launched a compact, dual-SIM touchscreen phone Intex Cola. The phone comes with a 2.4-inch screen with 1.3 megapixel back camera with flash, wireless FM with antenna, webcam, in built games, GPRS-WAP, mobile tracker, 3.5 mm jack for audio output, USB-PC connectivity etc.

Besides, it has auto call record, social networking support, expandable memory upto 8GB, and a 1000 mAh battery. The phone is priced at Rs 2,200.

Chaze Mobile launched Chaze Chotu, priced at just Rs 1,099. The phone features rubber keypad, dual SIM (GSM + GSM) with dual standby feature, 4 GB expandable memory slot, Chaze Smart Zone featuring games, Facebook, Yahoo, Twitter and Google, a 4.6 cms TFT display and a 1050 mAh battery.

Enlighten tablet

Enlighten range of tablets is a product of EAFT Technologies, a Chennai based company, who has partnered with the Art of Living Foundation to provide preloaded content related to its users.

The Enlighten tablet is priced at Rs 16,999 for the Android 2.3 version called Enlighten, and offers content worth Rs 20,000 free stored in a 16GB card. The tablet has a front facing VGA Camera for Video Calling and works on a 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex A8 Processor, 512 MB RAM.

The 7-inch tablet has capacitive 5 point multi touch screen. The tablet also gets a Mini HDMI Port which allows watching content on the TV with HDMI support. There is also a USB Port and Micro SD Slot. Battery Capacity is 4000 mAh.

The Enlighten Tablet comes in 16 GB inbuilt memory and 32 GB extendable memory version. It also is Wi-Fi and bluetooth Enabled, and offers 3G via dongle.

For external connectivity it has an HDMI port, Micro SD slot, 3.5 mm audio out, and a USB 2.0 port for 3G dongle. Wicked Leak's Wammy is powered by 3,800 mAh battery which the company claims to provide a back up of over 4 hours with Wi-Fi on.

The Wicked leak 3G Wammy Plus is an Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) based 3G tablet launched for the Indian market carrying a price tag of Rs 11,499.

The Wammy Plus is a 7-inch display based tablet featuring a 7-inch 800 x 480 pixel resolution display with integrated 3G calling capabilities, so users can use any SIM to connect to cellular network. It is powered by 1 GHz process#8744 512 MB RAM and features 4 GB internal memory. The storage capacity can be expanded via a slot provided for a 32GB micro SD card.

It has a 3000 mAh battery under the hood and in terms of connectivity, Wi-Fi and 3G. Wammy Plus has a VGA front and rear camera along with HDMI port which will allows content playback on HDTV as well.

iBall had announced the Slide tablet back in the month of May following that iBall announced the launch of the Slide 3G tablet. The iBall Slide 3G tablet comes with full cellular support with the use of GSM SIM.

The tablet has a 7-inch screen with an 800 x 480 resolution and according to the company it can play 1080P HD videos as well. This tablet houses a 1 GHz processor and comes preloaded with Android v2.3 Gingerbread operating system.

The iBall Slide 3G has a HDMI port for connecting it to an HDTV too. The tablet features dual stereo speakers, and 8 GB of internal storage, extendable up to 32 GB. The Slide 3G comes with a 4400 mAh battery while the Slide 3G is priced at Rs 16,499 for the Indian Market.
