It's the Nano of tablet computers. At $35, (approx Rs 1500) Sakshat may just give some of the more expensive tablet PCs a run for their money.
Developed by the Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institute of Technology, Rajasthan, Sakshat is developed as part of the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology.
The programme hopes to connect over 25,000 colleges across the country using an existing Sakshat portal.
On July 22 last year, Kapil Sibal the Human Resource Development Minister unveiled a prototype and tentatively pegged the price at around $35. As per the eventual plan, the price would eventually drop to $20 and then finally to $10 per unit.
Sakshat runs on the Android OS and boasts of some pretty interesting features including web browsing (of course) and word processing software.
It is Wi-Fi enabled, has a mini and full USB port, a miniSD card and a SIM card slot.
Sakshat also comes with 2GB of memory using memory card and a solar-charging option so you don't always have to depend upon electricity.
The much awaited tablet device will be launched on October 5.
