Poll: Best engineering college in India
Browse through the Top 10 list of 2011 and register your vote for the best engineering college in IndiaThe annual India Today survey results for the best colleges in the country for 2011 were declared last week.
More than 1500 colleges had participated in the survey which ranked institutions stream-wise offering courses in arts, science, commerce, engineering, medicine and law.
The institutions were assessed for the following parameters:
- Reputation
- Academic Input:
- Student Care
- Infrastructure
- Placement
- Perceptual Rank
- Factual Rank
While IITs ruled the roost, a couple of new institutes have also been included in this year's top 10 list of colleges.

1. IIT Kanpur
Maintaining its top position is the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.
The Central deemed University located in Uttar Pradesh, was established in 1959 as one of the first Indian Institute of Technology.
Although the institute started with 100 students and a limited faculty, today, the Institute caters to about 2,255 undergraduate and 1476 postgraduate students with the help of 309 faculty and more than 900 supporting staff.
With a sprawling 1,100 acre campus, they have large, dedicated research centres besides independent libraries for each department of research.
They have eleven specialisations in engineering studies, which includes Industrial and Management Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Management and Nuclear Engineering and Technology.

2. IIT Delhi
Staying put at its second place is Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.
When it was established on August 21, 1961, the institute was named College of Engineering and Technology, New Delhi. Two years later, in 1963, it was upgraded to Indian Institute of Technology.
IIT-Delhi currently has 13 departments and 11 multi-disciplinary centres of research activity, which offer around 700 courses every semester, including undergraduate and post graduate programmes.
Last year, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), an educational and scientific society which works towards enabling advancing computing as a science and profession awarded the IIT-Delhi Student Chapter for its outstanding activities in the field of advanced computing.

Pushing itself a rank above from last year is the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
The first of IITs that was established in the year 1951, it owns the history of starting in a jailhouse.
IIT-Kharagpur also boasts of having the largest campus (2,100 acres) amongst all other IITs, besides having the most departments, and the highest student enrolment every year.
IT Kharagpur has 19 academic departments, eight multi-disciplinary centres/schools, and 13 schools of excellence in addition to laboratories and central research facilities. With an impressive faculty strength of 450 along with 2200 employees, the Institute caters to over 2700 students.
Among their several interesting initiatives is the Entrepreneurship Cell (E-Cell), a student's organisation within the Institute that tries to promote entrepreneurship among students throughout India.

4. IIT Madras
Slipping down a rank from last year, the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras stands at number 4 this year.
Established in 1959, the residential institute spanning 630 acres of campus land currently comprises nearly 460 faculty members, over 4500 students and close to 1250 administrative and supporting staff.
It is known for its high standards in teaching, research and industrial consultancy in the country.
The Institute has 16 academic departments, each offering programmes in science, engineering and research from undergraduate to doctoral level.

5. IIT Roorkie
Moving up the ladder from its sixth position last year is the Indian Institute of Technology-Roorkie
One of the oldest technical institutions of the country, the Indian Institute of Technology-Roorkie was established in 1847 AD as the first engineering college in India during the British regime. It completed its150th anniversary in October 1996.
The Institute currently offers undergraduate courses in 10 disciplines of Engineering and Architecture and postgraduates degrees in 55 disciplines of Engineering, Applied Science, Architecture and planning.
The Institute is well equipped to offer doctoral work in all the above departments and research centres.

6. Birla Institute of Technology and Science
Improving its position from rank 7 against last year is the Birla Institute of Technology and Science Pilani.
From its humble beginnings in early 1900s as a small school under the name Birla Colleges of Arts, Commerce, Engineering, Pharmacy and Science, it soon became popular for its high standards and contribution in the field higher education, particularly Humanities to Engineering.
In 1964, it was renamed as the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani.
BITS Pilani consists of 15 academic departments with a focus on education in engineering and the sciences.
The institute has developed and currently administers the much recognised all-India computerised entrance test BITSAT (BITS Admission Test), which is the first of its kind exam in India.
This is the only Indian Institute of its kind which has more than one campus in the country, namely Goa and Hyderabad with an extension centre in Bangalore and an international campus in Dubai, UAE.

7. Delhi Technological University, New Delhi
From being on the thirteenth position last year, the Delhi Technological University, New Delhi certainly seems to have made formidable progress this year.
Initially named as Delhi Polytechnic, which was later renamed to Delhi College of Engineering in July 2009, the college came into existence in the year 1941 with an aim to meet the demand for trained and technical power in Indian industries.
Equipped with a strong infrastructure and student resources in its varied research and library centres, it currently offers comprehensive undergraduate and post graduate courses in engineering, science and technology.

8. NITK Surathkal
Last year at number 10, the National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal occupies rank 8 this year.
An autonomous university, NIT-Surathkal was founded in July 1960 as a joint venture between the Government of Karnataka and the Government of India, under the name Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC), Surathkal.
Today, it has over 14 academic departments, 12 supporting centres besides 200 qualified and dedicated faculty members along with 300 supporting staff members.
The institute offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Engineering, Science and Management to 3300 students.
NITK Surathkal is also one of few universities in the world which has a private beach, including a lighthouse (the only one in India).

9. IT BHU, Varanasi
The proposed upgradation of the Institute of Technology-Banaras Hindi University to IIT-BHU against a Lok Sabha bill on March 2011 has certainly proved advantageous to the institute. It was ranked at position eleven last year.
Spread over 1,300 acres of campus, the Institute came into existence in 1971.
It offers versatile postgraduate training to aspirants and conducts extensive and advanced research activities in Engineering and Technology.
It has so far produced more than 23,500 graduates, 3,600 post graduates and over 800 doctors, most of whom are working with leading establishments in diverse sectors across the country.

10. IIT Guwahati
Last but not the least, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati that ranked number 9 last year, also managed to get into the top 10 list.
Established as the sixth member of the IIT family, this institution was established in 1994 and commenced activities 1995 onwards.
At present, the Institute which is scenically located on the north bank of Brahmaputra River in Guwahati, offers a tranquil setting for residential students.
It currently has 11 departments and three inter-disciplinary academic centres covering engineering, science and humanities disciplines.
