Long hours, over a decade spent in education, and eventually an erratic personal life. Yet, medicine is a noble profession, and one that is not for the faint-hearted.

In the second part, we give you a low down on the top 10 medical exams you can consider.
1. All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS MBBS)
All India Institute of Medical Sciences was established in 1952 as an institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament.
Every year more than 80,000 candidates apply for MBBS course in AIIMS for only 50 vacancies, which makes it one of the toughest of entrance examinations.
The cost of the application form for AIIMS is Rs. 1,000 and it can be filled online or offline.
Eligibility
Applicants must have passed 12th standard or equivalent examination with at least 60 percent aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English.

Test pattern and selection
AIIMS Entrance for MBBS is a paper-based test of 3 ½ hours duration.
It has 200 multiple-choice and reason-assertion type questions.
There are 60 questions each from Physics, Chemistry and Biology and 20 questions from General Knowledge.
There is negative marking for incorrect answers.

All India Pre-Medical/ Dental Test conducted by the CBSE, New Delhi is amongst the toughest exams for admission to various reputed medical colleges spread across the country.
The cost of application form is Rs. 1000 for General/OBC and Rs 550 for SC/ST/ PH.
The University of Delhi will not conduct Delhi University Medical-Dental Entrance Test (DUMET) for admission to MBBS/ BDS for the Session-2012-2013.
Admission to MBBS/ BDS Courses for all categories under Delhi quota will be made on the basis of the merit of AIPMT.
Eligibility
A candidate should be aged between 17-25 years and passed 12th with at least 50 per cent marks with PCB.

Test pattern and selection
The Preliminary Examination is of 3 hours duration and consists of one paper containing 200 objective type questions from Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology).
The final examination is also of 3 hours and consists of one paper containing 120 objective type questions from Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology).
Candidates will be selected on the basis of a certain cut-off mark in the entrance exam.

AFMC, Pune, was established in 1948.
All the 130 candidates admitted to AFMC 2012, Pune have compulsory liability to serve as commissioned officers in the Armed Forces Medical Services for seven years on graduation.
The cost of application form for AFMC is Rs. 280.
Eligibility
Applicants must have passed class 12 or equivalent examination of statutory Indian University/Board, securing not less than 60 per cent aggregate marks in the 3 science subjects taken together, not less than 50 per cent marks in each of the science subjects and not less than 50 per cent marks in English.

The entrance exam is a paper-based test on Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Intelligence, Logic, Reasoning and English Language and Comprehension.
Candidates selected in the written test, will be shortlisted and called for interview at Pune.

BHU-PMT (Pre-Medical Test) is held annually for admission to various Bachelors' courses in medicine which include MBBS, BDS, BAMS and BPharm from Banaras Hindu University.
The seat distribution is as follows: MBBS (84 seats); BDS (38); BAMS (50); BPharm (33).
The cost of the application form is Rs. 1500 for GEN/OBC and Rs. 1000 for SC/ST candidates and it can be bought from the designated branches of Bank of Baroda, BHU Branch, SS Hospital, Varanasi.
Eligibility
The candidates must have passed class 12 examination or equivalent examination with minimum 50 per cent in English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Zoology + Botany) taken together.
Candidates appearing in qualifying examination may also apply.
BPharm
A minimum of 60 per cent marks (55 per cent marks for SC/ ST) and respective PC candidates.

Test pattern and selection
Admission to MBBS course is done through an entrance test which has two stages, PMT Screening and PMT Mains.
Only those who qualify in PMT Screening can appear for PMT Mains for MBBS course.
Admission to other courses like BDS, BPharm and BAMS is through only PMT Screening.
The screening exam is of objective type and consists of 200 questions from Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology whereas the mains exam is of subjective type.

Christian Medical College Vellore, which is affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai, holds an all-India entrance test (CMC Vellore Common Entrance Test) every year to select students for admission into various undergraduate level medical and paramedical courses.
The intake for MBBS is 60 seats.
The cost of the application form is Rs 750.
Eligibility
Minimum 60 per cent marks at 10+2 level each in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Test pattern and selection
The entrance exam questions are from Physics, Chemistry, Biology and General Ability and a few questions of current topical interest.
After the declaration of results, a final list for counselling is prepared based on merit and successful candidates are called for interview.

The UGC has awarded the deemed university status under the name of Dr M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute.
The university is further accredited with the status of B+ (78.5 per cent) by the NACC.
Dr. M.G.R. University's Faculty of Medical Sciences is an important department in the university and has a huge intake of students each year.
The cost of application form is Rs 550.
Eligibility
Minimum 55 per cent marks at 10+2 level each in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
Those with B.Sc degree from any Indian university (recognised by the association of Indian university and accepted as equivalent by the standing academic board and Governing council of the University) with one of the following subjects as a major subject--Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and one other science subject at least up to ancillary level.

Dr. D.Y.Patil University conducts its own admission test that is All India Entrance Test (AIET 2012) for admission to various undergraduate courses such as MBBS and BDS in Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical College and Hospital and D.Y. Patil Dental College and Hospital.
DY Patil Medical College and Hospital was established in 1996 and is approved by Medical Council of India and Government of Maharashtra. DY Patil Medical College has 150 seats for MBBS course.
Dr. DY Patil Dental College has 100 seats for BDS course and is approved by Dental Council of India.
Application form can be obtained from the university office on payment of Rs 500.

Candidates who secure the minimum 50 per cent marks at AIET and satisfy the eligibility norms laid down by respective councils will be selected.

Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences was declared as a Deemed University in 2005.
The university has different colleges for different courses like Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College is for MBBS and Sharad Pawar Dental College is for BDS course.
The annul intake recognised by university for MBBS course is 150 and 100 for BDS.
The university conducts its own entrance exam for undergraduate course -- DMMIS AIPMET.

The Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences was declared as a university under section 3 of the UGC Act in May 2005.
The university now has a number of constituent colleges, which include vocations like Medical, Dental, Physiotherapy, Nursing and Biotechnology.
The medical college has been recognised by the Malaysian Medical Council. The university conducts its own entrance test called KAIET (Krishna All India Entrance Test).
The cost of information brochure and application form is Rs 500 and the cost of entrance test is Rs. 1000.
Eligibility
A candidate to open category must have obtained not less than 50 per cent (i.e. 150 out of 300) marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together at the HSC (or equivalent) examination.
A candidate belonging to backward class must have obtained not less than 40 per cent (i.e. 120 out of 300) marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together at the HSC (or equivalent) examination.

Test pattern and selection
The KAIET will consist of one common question paper in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology) consisting of 200 multiple choice questions 50 in Physics, 50 in Chemistry and 100 in Biology.
There is no choice among the questions.
The candidate is expected to attempt all the 200 questions. Out of four circles provided for selection of answers against a question, the candidate should fill up one circle only.
Each correct answer will be given 1 mark. There shall be no negative marking for wrong answers and the duration of exam is 3 hours.
Selection will be based on merit.

Manipal University, Karnataka conducts an All India Manipal University Online Entrance Test for admission to its MBBS and BDS programmes.
The Entrance Test fee is Rs 1000 for each course.
Eligibility
Candidate should not be below 17 years of age and must have cleared 10+2 or equivalent education with 55 per cent aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Test pattern and selection
The admissions to the MBBS and BDS courses are done on the basis of the Entrance Test conducted by Manipal University.
The entrance test is of 2 ½ hours duration and comprises 240 multiple choice questions.
It is divided into the sections namely: Physics (60 questions), Chemistry (60 questions), Biology (80 questions) and English and General Aptitude (40 questions).
Candidates need to score a minimum of 50 percent aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology in the online entrance test to be eligible for admissions.
