Shashi Tharoor backs DU's four-year degree programme

Minister of state for HRD Shashi Tharoor feels that the Delhi University's decision is a potentially positive one.

Backing Delhi University's proposal to introduce a four-year long degree programme, Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor has said it was potentially very, very positive.

"..in my view, this is potentially very, very positive. We have to see how it works out in practice. But we have time to get it right. Don't forget those who are joining today will only reach the fourth year in three years time from now," he said.

He observed that the government believed that the university has followed due process within its academic providence.

"(If) Academic Council, their Executive Council has approved, then I don't think it should be the Ministry's job to overrule. So, I hope people will accept that this is the position or principle," he said.

Delhi University had recently decided to introduce a four-year undergraduate course in its programmes.

The courses under the new four-year undergraduate programme comprise Foundation Courses (11 in number), compulsory for all students to be taught in the first four semesters in order to strengthen their educational base.

Discipline Courses I (20 in number) which are subject specific courses promoting in-depth knowledge, Discipline Courses II (6 in number) are meant for students who wish to gain ‘minor’ knowledge of a subject other than Discipline I while Application Courses which are skill based -- Integrating Mind, Body and Heart and Cultural Activities lead to value-based education and NSS/NCC/Sports which encourages physical fitness as well as engagement with the community.
