India's best medical colleges of 2011

Browse through the top 10 list of medical colleges of 2011 and register your vote for the best medical college in India.

The annual India Today survey results for the best colleges in the country for 2011 were declared last week. More than 1500 colleges had participated in the survey which ranked institutions stream-wise offering courses in arts, science, commerce, engineering, medicine and law.

The institutions were assessed for the following parameters:

1. All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi

All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi

Consistently maintaining the lead position is All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.

Since the institute was inaugurated in 1956, it has emerged as one of the prime centres of education imparting education and research facilities in medical and para medical courses.

AIIMS is known to offer the best and comprehensive facilities in teaching, research and patient-care.

It currently provides courses both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and awards its own degrees in 42 different disciplines.

AIIMS also runs a College of Nursing where it trains students for BSc(Hons).

2. Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi

Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi

Moving up three places from last year is Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi.

It's a government college affiliated to the Delhi University.

Although the college made its humble beginning in a hospital block in 1958, the foundation for the main building of the college was laid October 1959 and later declared open officially on February 26, 1961.

Every year, the college admits 200 students to its MBBS course and 40 to its BDS courses respectively.

3. University College of Medical Science and Research Centre, New Delhi

Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, Shahdara

On third position is University College of Medical Science and Research Centre, New Delhi

Founded in the year 1971, the college is affiliated to the Delhi University and offers learning, teaching and practising opportunities to medical students.

It is at presently associated with Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, Shahdara which serves as a teaching hospital. The hospital has a 1000-bed capacity for attending patients.

Among other facilities available are sports and gym facilities.

Construction is underway to include a new block to accommodate obstetrical and gynaecological services and some super-speciality departments like Nephrology and Endocrinology.

4. Christian Medical College, Vellore

Christian Medical College, Vellore

Sliding down two spots from last year is Christian Medical College, Vellore.

It is also known as CMC College.

When it started out in 1900, it was known as a single-bed clinic.

Today, the college today has close to 8,000 staff, about 2700 beds and provides courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level which include medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and medical lab technology.

5. Armed Forces Medical College, Pune

Armed Forces Medical College, Pune

On fifth position is Armed Forces Medical College, Pune.

Established in 1948, AFMC is managed by the Indian Armed Forces.

AFMC began as a postgraduate training and research centre. It has over the decades grown its scope to include dental surgery, undergraduate courses and nursing.

It has a 160-acre campus offering courses in forensic medicine, microbiology, obstetrics, psychiatry and internal medicine.

More than 1,500 students are enrolled in the college's MBBS (130 seats), BSc and postgrad (MD, MS, MCh and PhD) programmes.

AFMC is the only medical college except Army Medical College Rawalpindi Pakistan in Asia where all expenses are paid by the Government (Ministry of Defence). Medical Cadets at the college receive free tuition, lodging and boarding, besides uniforms, book subsidies etc.

Among other facilities include sporting areas for tennis, squash, basketball, and a swimming pool.

6. Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi

Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi

Moving up by a rank from last year is Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi.

Established in 1916, LHMC is today one of Delhi University's most prestigious medical colleges in the country catering to female students. It had 16 students in its first year.

The college is named after Lady Hardinge, the wife of the then viceroy who strongly emphasised the need for a medical college for Indian women to study medicine.

Apart from the 150 MBBS seats it, it also runs postgraduate courses (MD and MS) and diploma courses.

7. JIPMER, Puducherry

JIPMER, Puducherry

On seventh position is Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research, Puducherry.

The origins of this autonomous body of education, which was established under the Indian government's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare dates back to as early as 1823.

The 195-acre campus currently has 28 academic departments.

Today the college has 300 teachers and 565 resident doctors providing training to over 800 students enrolled in its undergrad and postgrad courses.

8. B.J. Medical School (BJMC), Ahmedabad

BJ Medical School (BJMC), Ahmedabad

On eighth position is BJ Medical School (BJMC), Ahmedabad.

In 1871, it was originally founded as Ahmedabad Medical School in 1871.

In 1951, it was affiliated with the Gujarat University in 1951 for undergraduate courses later in 1956, for postgraduate level.

With an annual intake of 250 students, BJ Medical College is considered among one of the best medical colleges in the city.

9. Grant Medical College, Mumbai

Grant Medical College, Mumbai

On ninth position is Grant Medical College, Mumbai.

The medical institute is affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik.

It was founded in 1845, and is known as one of the oldest institutions teaching Western medicine in Asia.

Today, it caters to over 1,000 across the country offering courses in over 30 specialties under its MBBS, MD, DM, nursing and DMLT courses.

10. Kasturba Medical College, Manipal

On tenth position is Kasturba Medical College, Manipal

Also known as KMC, it was set up in 1953 as the country's first medical college in the private sector.

Spread over a 200-acre campus, the college offers 34 courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. It also offers certificate courses.

The college is known for its support to research projects undertaken by its staff and students nationally and internationally.
