With public sector undertakings giving prominence to GATE scores, the prospects for engineering graduates just got bigger and better, writes Abhijit Chaudhari, Director, GATEFORUM. Read on to know what course you must pursue and how it can add value to your career.
To most of us, the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a mere entrance test for admission to post graduate programmes in Engineering and Science at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Indian Institutes of Technology, National Institutes of Technology and other engineering colleges in India.However, with many Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) now recruiting through the GATE, the prospects are getting better for many science and engineering graduates in the country.
This means that while a GATE score was earlier the ticket to masters' programs in reputed institutes, it is now also a gateway to cushy PSU jobs.

What to pursue: Mechanical Engineering /Master of Technology
Eligibility: BE/BTech in Electronics and Communication Engineering, BE/B.Tech in Electrical Engineering
Where to pursue: IISc, Bangalore; IIT (Mumbai, Kanpur, Chennai, Kharagpur Delhi and Roorkee)
GATE requisite: An All India Rank (AIR) of less than 800
Recruitment: Intel, Texas Instruments, AMD, Cypress Semiconductors and Analog Devices are some of the leading recruiters hiring these graduates
Average salary: Rs 10 to 12 lakhs per annum
What to pursue: ME/MTech/MS
Eligibility: BE/BTech in Electronics and Communication Engineering
Where to pursue: IISc, Bangalore, IIT (Mumbai, Kanpur, Chennai, Kharagpur, Delhi and Roorkee)
GATE requisite: An All India Rank (AIR) of less than 1200
Recruitment: Leading technology enterprises like like Intel Mobile Communications and Qualcomm are seeking candidates who have a degree in communications technology.
Average salary: Rs 8 to 10 lakhs per annum
What to pursue:ME/MTech/MS
Eligibility: BE/BTech in Electronics and Communication Engineering, BE/BTech in Electrical Engineering, BE/BTech in Instrumentation Engineering
Where to pursue: IISc Bangalore, IIT (Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati and Roorkee)
GATE requisite: An All India Rank (AIR) below 1400
Recruitment: Companies like NVIDIA, Philips and Samsung are recruiting control engineering graduates across the country.
Average salary: Rs 8 to 10 lakhs per annumWhat to pursue: ME/MTech/M.S
Eligibility: BE/BTech in Mechanical Engineering
Where to pursue: IIT (Mumbai, Kanpur, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati and Roorkee
GATE requisite: An All India Rank (AIR) less than 1000
Recruitment: General Motors, Bosch and Philips are some companies that are hiring mechanical design engineering graduates.
Average salary: Rs 6 to 8 lakhs per annum
What to pursue: ME/MTech/MS
Eligibility: BE/BTech in Mechanical Engineering
Where to pursue: IIT (Mumbai, Kanpur, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati and Roorkee)
GATE requisite: An All India Rank (AIR) of less than 1000 get admission into atleast one of the above institutes.
Recruitment: Cummins, General Motors and Tata Motors are hiring thermal science and engineering graduates.
Average salary: Rs 6 to 9 lakhs per annum
What to pursue: ME/MTech/MS
Eligibility: BE/BTech in Mechanical Engineering, BE/BTech in Production/Manufacturing Engineering or BE/BTech in Industrial Engineering
Where to pursue: IIT (Mumbai, Kanpur, Chennai, Kharagpur, Delhi, Guwahatii and Roorkee)
GATE requisite: An All India Rank (AIR) of less than 1500
Recruitment: Tata Motors, Hero Motocorp and Hyundai are hiring manufacturing science and engineering graduates.
Average salary: Rs 6 to 8 lakhs per annum
What to pursue: ME
Eligibility: BE/BTech in any discipline
Where to pursue: IISc Bangalore
GATE requisite: An All India Rank (AIR) of less than 25
Recruitment: Although it is a niche course, MNCs like Google and IBM are hiring system science and automation engineers.
Average salary: Rs 9 to 12 lakhs per annum
What to pursue: MTech
Eligibility: BE/BTech in Electrical Engineering
Where to pursue: IIT Mumbai
GATE requisite: An All India Rank (AIR) of less than 400
Recruitment: Some of the companies that are hiring energy systems engineers would be GE Energy, Suzlon and General Motors among others.
Average salary: Rs 7 to 9 lakhs per annum
