With more features and frills, the updated Hero Xtreme seems worth a bang for the buck, says Faisal Ali Khan of MotorBeam.com

The 150cc motorcycle segment is very hot indeed, with a multitude of bikes available in the market. One of the early launches was the Hero Honda CBZ, which is today known as the Hero Xtreme.

India's largest two-wheeler maker recently gave the Xtreme a minor update, bringing it freshness to compete with new rivals and fierce competition from established bikes in the segment.

Hero has made minor changes to the styling of the bike. The front sports a sharper headlight cowl while the fuel tank looks quite the same.

The side panels, single piece seat, alloy wheels and tail section is also carried from the old bike.

What the 2014 Hero Xtreme does get is minute changes on the exhaust, split grab tails while the brake light gets LEDs.

Quality of the motorcycle is good and it feels well put together.

The Hero Xtreme gets an all new instrument cluster which moves to a trapezoid design.

It incorporates a side stand warning while also getting a digital speedometer which also has an odometer, fuel meter, trip meter and a clock.

The bike also gets a mobile charging dock inside the seat.

Powering the Hero Xtreme is the same 149.2cc engine which is sourced from Honda.

There is no hike in output, the engine continues to produce 14.4 BHP of peak power output at 8500 RPM and 12.8 Nm of peak torque output at 6500 RPM.

This motor is coupled to a 5-speed gearbox, which is butter smooth. The engine too is terrifically refined, lacks vibrations and redlines smoothly.

The low-end is punchy which helps riding in the city while the mid-end helps in making quick overtakes when you want to get going on the highways.

Mileage is impressive at 52 km/l.

Hero has given the 2014 Xtreme wider tyres which has improved the already impressive ride quality of this motorcycle.

There are no changes to the chassis or the suspension. The brakes remain the same too so there is no change on that front either.

The Xtreme is easy to handle but not as much fun to ride as some of the 150cc bikes available currently.

It really is the weight (compared to rivals) and big 18-inch wheels which hinder dynamics of this bike.

The 2014 Hero Xtreme continues to be the same as before, albeit with minor changes which boosts its appeal.

It competes with the Honda CB Trigger and Yamaha FZ-S but is priced less than both, although not by a considerable margin.

At Rs 75,500 (on-road pice in Mumbai), the Xtreme has more goodies which make it quite a lot of value.

Not to forget, Hero's massive dealership network which swells the sweetness of this proposition even further in smaller cities.
