The TVS Jupiter is a feature loaded scooter priced attractively writes Faisal Ali Khan of MotorBeam.com.
The scooter market in India is seeing increased demand as people move to the practical two-wheeler alternative. While Honda is the leader in the scooter space, many have tried to dethrone it but to little avail.
Now TVS has launched the Jupiter, a scooter which looks extremely promising on paper with the specs to give the Honda Activa a good run for its money.
We get astride to find out if the new TVS scooter is as big as its name suggests.
The TVS Jupiter resembles the Honda Activa at the front but it's a Wego underneath which is visible from certain angles.
The turn indicators are mounted on the panel below while the side panels are rounded giving it a seamless appearance.
The rear gets edgy tail lights with LEDs in the stop lamp.
The alloy wheels are black coloured and the Jupiter is an appealing scooter to look at.
The instrument cluster on the Jupiter is all new and doesn't look like the Wego at all.
The easy to read console has a big speedometer and everything here is analogue.
There is an Eco and Power mode which is clearly seen on the left side of the speedometer.
The switchgear on the Jupiter is the same as the Wego. You do get a pass light switch which is integrated with the high beam button.
The ignition switch is red in colour while the horn button is yellow for that distinct feel.
The Jupiter gets 17-litres of under-seat storage which is quite generous.
The scooter also gets twin hooks, one at the top and one below for carrying bags. USB charger is an optional extra.
The fuel filler is placed right above the tail light.
Powering the TVS Jupiter is a 109.7cc, single-cylinder engine which produces 8 PS of power and 8 Nm of torque.
Now this motor is the same unit which powers the Wego but TVS has made subtle changes to the powerplant.
The engine offers the Jupiter very brisk performance and low and mid-range torque is accessible, giving the scooter very linear performance.
The TVS Jupiter reaches its top speed of 85 km/hr very quickly and never does it feel uneasy in the city as there is plenty of pep for city riding.
Highway performance is decent too and TVS claims the Jupiter is the fastest 110cc scooter in the segment, doing the 0-60 km/hr run in just 7.2 seconds.
Mileage in the city is an impressive 47 km/l.
The TVS Jupiter is based on the same platform which underpins the Wego and thus the scooter uses the same chassis, tyres and wheels.
Unlike the Activa, Jupiter comes with modern telescopic forks which along with the added weight (4 kgs) and softer dampers give it a very good ride quality.
The Jupiter has a very mature suspension set up and feels stable at speed.
The handling of the TVS Jupiter is very good too and it's a scooter you can have fun by throwing it around corners.
The balance is good and the only chink in its armour are the TVS tyres which lack grip.
U-turn radius is short and manoeuvrability is hassle free. Brakes are decent offering good stopping power.
The TVS Jupiter is a fantastic scooter and among the best in the segment today. It offers a modern suspension and comes loaded with features like fuel reserve light, tubeless tyres, parking lamps, LED tail lights and optional USB charger.
Performance and mileage is good too and so are the dynamics. At Rs 46,534 (ex-showroom, Mumbai), the Jupiter is a well rounded package offering tremendous value for money.
