Coming out: Ad featuring a gay couple goes viral

Last updated on: June 12, 2015 13:31 IST

The American luxury jeweller Tiffany & Co has featured one.

Ray Ban has featured one.

So has GAP.

This advert that features a gay couple has gone viral.

It starts innocuously: a young lady seemingly getting ready to go somewhere.

There's another girl in the room. We assume it's her roommate or her friend because of the easy chemistry they share.

In a few moments you realise they aren't just friends; they are a couple.

And they are getting ready to meet her parents.

The parents never appear before the camera. We are never shown how the parents react.

We are left with a visual of a room with open windows, wind blowing through the white curtains.

The longform advertisement is for Anouk, a local ethnicwear brand -- the twosome use Anouk products -- that is anything but mainstream and has gone viral online.

You most certainly won't see this advertisement on television -- it is close to three-and-a-half minutes long.

And homosexuality is still illegal in India.

The advertisement is suggestive; should they be sued, Anouk could well say it wasn't about homosexuality.

But it is out there -- two young women, getting ready to meet the parents and a room with open windows and the wind blowing through the curtains.

That is not a bad start.

However this is not the first time we have had an advertisement that addresses the issue.

Fast Track had taken it up in an advertisement released a few years ago.

Cheeky and funny, a far cry from this one, the Fast Track ad shows two young women stepping out of the closet... literally! :-)
