According to NASA, last night's supermoon kicked off a special 'supermoon trilogy'.

This phenomenon occurs when the full moon is at the closest point of its orbit to the Earth, making it appear bigger and brighter than usual.

The next supermoon of the trilogy will occur in less than a month, on January 1, 2018.

But it is the third supermoon -- on January 31, 2018 -- which will be the most special. It will also be a "blue moon" and coincide with a lunar eclipse.
