How safe are women in India today?

Last updated on: December 16, 2013 19:48 IST

Despite the furore after the Delhi gang rape on December 16, 2012, cases of molestation and sexual assault have been on the rise.

The charges of assault against Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal and retired Supreme Court Justice A K Ganguly are just two such instances that have caught the public eye.

Thousands of cases of sexual assault, molestation and rape go unreported across India every day because of police callousness, victims' fear of being exposed to cruel public scrutiny and many other such reasons.

The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 has come into force only on December 9 this year.
