Situated on the isle’s northern coast, many groups have stomped by, through history -- Phoenicians, Arabs, Normans, Romans. That's reflected in its architecture -- Palermo Cathedral or the Norman Palace. There are lively street markets, wonderful food, sunny coastlines, rolling hills to be viewed.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

We may have never visited Rio, but it has always been part of our travel IQ. For its Carnival. For its lively music & dance. For places like Ipanema & Copocabana, whose names have resonated with us for as long as we can remember. And for the splendid Christ the Redeemer statue atop Corcovado, near Sugarloaf Mountain.

Rome, Italy

Bella Roma! Once the capital of the great, great Roman Empire, so much of its halcyon days exists in modern Rome, along with the new and the delicious (pasta, pizza, gelato, rich pasticcerias fare). Vatican City, the seat of the Roman Catholic Church, is located in its heart.

London, United Kingdom

Another seat of a former empire, London's charms are rather addictive. Slow but fast. Very English but now also very global. Haughty. Alluring. Earthy.... One visit is never enough for the sprawling city. You have to return again and again to view its landmarks, absorb its vibes, shop, eat.
