Top 10 engineering branches in India; Computer Science leads, IT loses sheen

Is Information Technology losing its sheen?

Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering topped the list of engineering branches while the once popular Information Technology seems to have lost its sheen.

Should I take Computer Science or go for Mechanical?

Is Textile Engineering the right option for me?

Questions like these come to the mind of every engineering aspirant at the time of branch selection and locking the college during the IIT-JEE Mains or any other state-level entrance exam.

Most often than not, students decide, based on what appears to be the most preferred choice, what is considered hot generally and what their peer group think would have a high job potential.

A small number of students also look at where their interest area lies, and then decide accordingly.

To help you decide better, we examined the first choices of top students across 23 different entrance examinations in 3134 colleges.

We looked at the cut-offs (both opening and closing) for each of the branch in the top 10 per cent colleges in each state.

When these are sorted subject-wise, a distinct pattern emerged.

For example, in nearly 20 out of the 23 states Computer Science was the first choice for the toppers.

The cut-off scores for this branch hovered around the top 1 percentile score for each exam.

Mechanical Engineering appeared to be the next best choice.

On the other hand, Information Technology appears to have lost substantial sheen.

In every college that we identified, unless the institute specialises in IT, it appeared to be the lowest choice among the toppers.

Biotechnology was a close second.

In the following pages, we have explained in detail the 10 most preferred branches and 10 least preferred branches for you.
