Not a single Indian university has made it to the World University Rankings 2021 released by the Times Higher Education.
Surprisingly, with 14 new universites, India saw a record 63 institutions qualify for the rankings this year, the highest for any country or region.
Yet, only two Indian universities -- the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru (placed in the 301-350 group) and the Indian Institute of Technology-Ropar (351-400) -- are mentioned in the world's top 400 of the same rankings.
Overall, 1,500 universities from 93 countries were ranked in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020.
Oxford topped the rankings followed by Stanford and Harvard.
Among Asian universities, China's Tsinghua university was ranked the best in the continent with an overall rank of 20.
'Chinese universities have made several historic gains in the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings, with data revealing that the Asian giant is closing in on, and in some areas overtaking, the US in terms of research,' Times Higher Education stated.
Speaking about India's performance, Phil Baty, chief knowledge officer, Times Higher Education, said, '...Of the debutante Indian institutions to qualify in this year's rankings, Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology in Delhi, King George's Medical University and Mahatma Gandhi University rank highest (601-800 band).'
'Overall, the Indian Institute of Science (301-350) maintains its position as the highest ranked Indian university in the rankings since it first qualified for the rankings in 2015.'
