US fellowships for Indian students

What: The United States Educational Foundation in India invites applications for its International Fulbright Science and Technology Award for PhD study in science, technology, or engineering at top US institutions.

Details

~ This new award is sponsored by the US Department of State and is designed to be the most prestigious international scholarship in science and technology.

~ The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State will fully fund grants for up to three years under this programme.

~ After three years, US universities will cover the remaining expenses toward completion of a PhD.

~ Academic placement (university admission and other formalities) of the selected scholars will be handled by the International Institute of Education.

~ Fellows will travel to the US on J-1 visas and will be subject to J-visa regulations.

~ In the first year of this programme, approximately 25 awards will be offered worldwide to candidates who demonstrate unique aptitude and innovation in scientific fields.

~ USEFI will forward two nominations to compete with candidates from all over the world for this fellowship.

Additional information

~ The grant will provide a monthly stipend for up to 36 months, health insurance, round-trip air travel, J-1 visa for up to five years, books and equipment, research and professional conference allowances and tuition fees.

~ No allowances are provided for dependents.

Are you eligible?

~ You must have a high level of academic/ professional achievement

~ You must be proficient in English with a recent TOEFL score (or equivalent, like IELTS), of 580 or higher.

~ Selected candidates without a valid TOEFL score will be required to take TOEFL.

~ You must be present in India at the time of submitting the application and for the interview.

~ You must be eligible for leave, if employed.

~ You must be in good health.

~ You must not be applying for or holding permanent residence (green card) in the US.

~ You must hold a valid Indian passport no later than September 1, 2006, for taking the TOEFL and GRE examinations, if required.

~ You must have completed an equivalent of a US bachelor's degree from a recognised Indian university with at least 60 percent marks.

~ You must possess a four-year bachelor's degree or a completed master's degree, if the bachelor's degree is of less than four years duration, before August 2007.
