What: Prithvi Theatre, Mumbai, is conducting the following summer workshops for kids:

Mime & Mask by Pravin, Magic Lantern (English)

Workshop details 

~ An introduction to the art of mime that draws from the participants' personal imagination to create stories.

~ Through a series of exercises based on the Marceau and Decroux techniques, the participant is made to experience the body in its most minute detail.

~ The idea of the narrative slowly appears in a performance without words.

~ This body work could lead to working with Commedia dell'Arte masks.

Age: 11 to 16 years

When: May 5 to 14 (10 days)

Time: 9.30 am to 12.30 pm (3 hours)

Body speak by Preethi Athreya (English)

Workshop details 

~ A dance workshop that introduces one to basic, yet challenging concepts of the line and the curve in the body.

~ Starting with principles of movement, the workshop deals with creating an awareness of how space becomes defined by the moving body.

~ Abstraction is explored using each body's innate rhythms and attitudes.

~ The workshop also deals with performing haikus drawing on the traditional concept of abhinaya.

Age: 11 to 16 years

Flowing with Poetry by Imogen Butler-Cole (English)

Playing with the spoken word, a variety of games investigating language and rhythm, performance and self-expression will lead to participants creating poetry of their own -- be it silly or serious, wistful or wonderfully weird.

Performing English Theatre in Indian Traditions by Neeraj Kabi (In English)

Workshop details

~ An enriching body-speech coordination workshop that teaches you the unique skill of performing English theatre pieces in Indian traditions of dance and martial arts, exploring new speech patterns (works of William Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde).

Age: 12 to 16 years

When: May 8 to 17 (10 days)

Time: 2 pm to 4.30 pm (2 ½ hours)

Gadbad Ghotala by Shaili Sathyu (Hindi)

Workshop details

~ Explore the world of Hindi verse through the medium of puppetry.

~ Make your own simple puppets based on poems by well-known writers.

~ A variety of verse and poetry in Hindi will be explored through improvisations, games and expression of the poems in different ways.

Note: Ability to read in Hindi and English is essential.

A poem in five acts by Sampurna Chattarji (English)

Workshop details

~ Creating a love for poetry by making it real, accessible, enjoyable, do-ble.

~ Making the poem, as an art form, come alive through a blend of exercises, examples, discussion, writing and finally, performance.

When: May 15 Mon to 19 Fri (5 days)

Time: 10.30 am to 12 noon (1 ½ hours)

~ Building a play from an idea/ story/ theme.

~ Ways of improvising, enhancing the performer's kit -- imagination, props, partner contact.

Workshop details

~ A hands-on workshop that weaves together various skills and perceptions to think and create in different ways.

~ Through thinking games, group activities and situations children explore the world around them.

Doing things with stories by Moloyashree Hashmi (English)

Workshop details

~ A range of activities with stories involving listening, telling, reading, reflecting, visualising and performing.

~ Creating new stories using the different arts.

~ Weaving language games and creative expressions around stories through individual and group work.
