What: VSO, an international development charity that works through volunteers, invites applications for its Overseas Volunteering Opportunities programme.

Programme benefits

VSO says:

~ You will need to tackle poverty and injustice throughout the developing world.

~ You can develop your own career by sharing your management, finance and fundraising skills to build capacity in countries like Nepal, Namibia, Mongolia and Tanzania.

~ You will be able to develop your higher order management skills as you have to liaison with a range of stakeholders to complete key tasks, like creating management systems, developing the skills of local staff or devising strategies for income generation.

~ You will get a free return air ticket and free accommodation.

~ You will earn a modest, but comfortable, living allowance.

Are you eligible?

~ You must be able to spend at least two years overseas.

~ You must be able to thrive in an unfamiliar environment.

~ You must enjoy challenges.

~ You must be able to live on a modest income.

~ You must be flexible and know the value of human relationships.

~ You must have an academic or professional qualification.

~ You must have two or more years of experience.

~ You must have transferable skills.

Skills required

~ NGO Management

You must be good at organisational development, strategic planning and staff development. 

~ IT Training

You will be involved in teaching and/or training colleagues in a secondary or vocational school setting. You could also be involved in IT specialist roles like network maintenance, programmers, web site and database design. You could even be asked to review and introduce new software/hardware.

~ Micro finance and Small Business Advice

You need to help develop a range of business advice and training for small businesses. For a limited number of placements, this involves the development of small business loans schemes.

~ Fundraising

You would have to help in maximising income-generating strategies by assisting with development of fundraising strategies, identifying new funding opportunities and developing promotional materials.

~ Community and social work

You will have to work with communities, help them organise themselves and work through partner organisations in community mobilisation.

~ Natural Resource Management

You will help in building the capacity of community groups and organisations to manage their natural resources.
