Mi 3 vs Mi 4 and selling 100 million Xiaomi phones

Dubbed as the ‘fastest’ smartphone in the world, Xiaomi has left no stone unturned to launch Mi 4, the successor to Mi 3 next year. But how is the Mi 4 different from Mi 3? Can these two along with a bouquet of smartphones launched by the Chinese company help it cross the 100 million mark next year?

Xiaomi Mi 4

Mi4 hasn’t even entered the market commercially but has definitely created the necessary buzz and garnered immense public admiration. Potentially a big-killer, this superbly loaded phone could hassle the big names in the Indian market.

Under some categories the Mi4 has substantially outplayed its previous edition; namely the camera, under-the-hood essentials, the exteriors and perhaps a handful of other aspects.

Here’s what we see:

Soon to be launched around next year and priced about 5 thousand than Mi 3, Mi4’s specs include a 5-inch Full HD display with a 1,920 x 1,080 pixel resolution. The Xiaomi Mi 3, on the other hand, features a screen of the same size with the same resolution.

Mi 3 is based on 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor while Mi4 draws its strength from the 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 processor.

The RAM has also been upgraded from 2 GB to 3 GB. Mi 4 runs on 3080mah battery while Mi 3 runs on a 3050mah powered battery.

Mi 4 is the first ever phone to include an IR blaster that assists in the control of applications. It’s got a great front 8 megapixel quality camera in comparison to Mi 3’s 2 megapixel one.

Although both of them have a 13 megapixel rear camera, Mi4 is definitely a better choice when it comes to video chatting, selfies, Instagram and other similar socialising activities.

As less than one per cent of all Mi 3 users utilise the contact-less technology, the NFC (Near-Field Communication) chip is missing in Mi4; according to CEO of Xiaomi Lei Jun. It should probably suit our conditions apart from keeping the cost low but it may transform into a shortcoming for Mi4 in the global field.

The exteriors are more or less the same but Mi4 inculcates a sturdy dust and water resistance body and is aesthetically far more appeasing to the eye than its predecessor. Personally, in essence Mi 4 could/should easily have been an upgraded version of Mi 3 and Xiaomi should have unveiled Mi 4 afresh with some REAL upgradations. It has the potential of being the top phone of 2015 and shall soon find its way on to countless ‘Bucket Lists’ across countries.

A soon to become point-of-view, Mi4 also supports 4G which Mi 3 unfortunately doesn’t and this certainly will add to its sales next year even though both of them are without expandable memory slots, a necessity for Asian markets!

Focussing specifically on the Indian market, missing on to features such as dual SIM availability, the associated ‘import challenges’ and expandable memory base might hamper the company’s’ revenue generation.

Xiaomi’s trying to manage selling 100 million units each year is highly optimistic but it is a possibility as the recorded sales have shot up by 20 per cent in the second quarter. We still need to wait and see their performances next financial year but the road ahead seems to get tougher with each passing day for top-sellers Micromax and Samsung!
