10 things you must know about Samsung Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7...

Samsung recently launched two smartphones in the mid-price segment, calledthe J series. The Samsung J5 and J7 are priced suitably to take on Chinese products from OnePlus, Xiaomi and others.

While the Samsung Galaxy J5 is priced at Rs 11,999, the Samsung Galaxy J7 costs Rs 14,999.

Here’s what you must know about these two handsets and their features.

Simple design; boxy looks

Both these handsets have a plain look and design that characterises the Galaxy series smartphones. The J5 and J7 have big chins, embedded with a physical home button. At the top of these devices you will find the speaker grille.

The bezels at the sides are thick, providing a solid impression. The power button is placed at the right side and the volume rocker is placed at the left side of these handsets.

At the bottom, you will find the power charging and data connectivity port along with a microphone and a 3.5mm audio jack.

The material used to build the J series smartphones is premium quality plastic that does not feel cheap in your hand. The back cover is plain, simple and features a powerful camera slot accompanied by a flash and a sensor.

Display

Samsung has been using Super AMOLED displays in the Galaxy series lately. These displays are better than that of its rivals while rendering colour on screen. However, while the Samsung Galaxy J5 sports a 5-inch HD display, its bigger sibling brandishes a slightly bigger 5.5-inch HD screen. Both touchscreens support 720 x 1280 pixels resolution. The Samsung Galaxy J5 offers its users a better 294-ppi density compared to the 267-ppi pixels density of the J7. The screen-to-body ratio of Galaxy J5 is 67.5 per cent and in the case of Galaxy J7, it is 69.6 per cent.

Easy to carry

The edges of these smartphones are rounded that allow users to easily put these in pockets. The grip too is good and chances of the J5 and J7 slipping out of your hand are minimal. Samsung Galaxy J5 has a dimension of 142.1mm x 71.8mm x 7.9mm and weighs 146 grams.

The slightly bigger Galaxy J7 has a dimension of 152.2mm x 78.7mm x 7.5mm and is a bit bulkier at 171 grams.

Powerful engines and recent OS

Samsung has provided these smartphones with the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop OS with TouchWiz UI overlaid on the top. To provide users a smooth and glitch-free experience, these are equipped with powerful processors and GPUs that allows them to take on any challenge, like playing high end games.

Galaxy J5 is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 Qualcomm MSM8916 Snapdragon 410 processor along with Adreno 306 GPU.

Galaxy J7, on the other hand, comes with a more powerful 1.5GHZ octa-core Exynos 7580 processor coupled with Adreno 405 Mali T720MP2 GPU.

Storage

There is little chance of getting short on memory with these handsets, as both of them are provided with 1.5GB of DDR3 RAM. In the Indian variant of Galaxy J5, the buyer will get 8GB of onboard memory, whereas the J7 model is blessed with 16GB of internal storage.

Both the handsets come with a microSD card slot that allows the users to add a further 128GB of external memory, if the need arises.

Sensors and FM radio

Samsung has packed both these smartphones with a decent pack of sensors, which allow better experience while using these handsets. These sensors include Accelerometer, proximity, hall sensor and few more. Moreover, these smartphones also feature FM radio with RDS recording feature.

Connectivity

Both Samsung Galaxy J5 and J7 are dual SIM smartphones that allow users a host of connectivity options. These include 4G, 3G, 2G, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi direct Wi-Fi Hotspot, Bluetooth v4.0 with A2DP, NFC, USB High speed 2.0 and Micro USB support, GLONASS, GPS and A-GPS.

The presence of 4G connectivity option makes them future proof as service providers are ready to roll out with their 4G networks.

Shooters

Samsung has realised the importance of powerful shooters in its mid and high level smartphones to cater to the rising demand of good quality selfies that look good to share on social media. That is why both these smartphones are provided with a 13MP autofocus primary camera with f/1.9 aperture in the rear along with LED flash that can shoot pictures in 4128 x 3096 pixels or record videos in 1080 pixels.

At the front, you will find a 5MP camera in both the devices along with flash that allows you to take brilliant selfies or do Skype chatting. These cameras also allow you to do geo-tagging, face detection and touch focus. In addition, one can use multiple modes inbuilt in the camera app like, Auto, Pro, Panorama, Continuous Shot, Beauty Face, Sound & Shot and Sports.

Galaxy J7 comes with an HDR mode too.

Battery

To run these powerful smartphones for longer duration, Samsung has provided Galaxy J5 with a 2,600mAh Li-ion battery that provides a standby time of 342 hours, whereas Galaxy J7 is equipped with a more powerful 3,000mAh Li-ion battery, which, as per company’s claim, gives you a standby time of 380 hours.

Availability, colours and special offers

As of now, Galaxy J5 and J7 are available through Flipkart only in white, black and gold. Samsung has also collaborated with Airtel to allow users experience its high speed 4G networks with access to double 4G LTE data along with unlimited music download worth Rs 549 for 6 months using the Wynk music app. There is also an offer for early buyers, who can purchase a flip cover worth Rs 999 for Rs 199 only.

In addition, Samsung has made a deal with the gaming giant, Gameloft, which will allow buyers of Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7 handsets, free in-game credits of up to Rs 3,200 for amazing titles like Asphalt 8, Modern Combat 5 and several others.
