Leading education magazine Times Higher Education has announced its annual Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
The rankings judge research-intensive universities world over across 13 performance indicators to provide a comprehensive list.
The performance indicators were grouped into five areas.
The weightage given to each of these indicators is mentioned below:
- Teaching (the learning environment) -- 30 per cent
- Research (volume, income and reputation) -- 30 per cent
- Citations (research influence) -- 30 per cent
- International outlook (staff, students and research) -- 7.5 per cent
- Industry income (knowledge transfer) -- 2.5 per cent
- The final list comprised the top 800 universities in the world.
While seven universities from the United States of America featured in the Top 10, not a single Indian university featured in the the Top 200.

A total of five Indian institutions featured in the Top 500.
- 276-300: Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore
- 276-300: Panjab University, India
- 351-400: Indian Institute of Technology Bombay
- 351-400: Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee
- 401-500: Indian Institute of Technology Madras
