Read on to find out which Indian institutes made the cut and why...

The Times Higher Education BRICS and Emerging Economies Rankings 2015 features a total of 11 Indian universities in its latest rankings.

Among the 11 Indian universities that made it to the Top 100, the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay were ranked among the Top 40.

The list of Top 100 includes institutions in countries classified as "emerging economies" by Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE), including the "BRICS" nations of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

The BRICS and Emerging Economies Rankings 2015 ranking uses the same methodology as the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and rates institutions based on 13 performance indicators that are grouped under five broad areas, namely:

  • Teaching: the learning environment (worth 30 per cent of the overall ranking score)
  • Research: volume, income and reputation (worth 30 per cent)
  • Citations: research influence (worth 30 per cent)
  • Industry income: innovation (worth 2.5 per cent)
  • International outlook: staff, students and research (worth 7.5 per cent).

China's Peking University topped the rankings this year with an overall score of 67.7, while Tsinghua University, China (overall score 67.2) and Middle East Technical University, Turkey (52.5) were ranked second and third respectively.

What's interesting to note is that the two Indian universities that made it to the Top 40 in 2015 ranking were not listed in the 2014 rankings.
