2017 KTM Duke 390: What's new?

2017 KTM Duke 390 was spotted on test earlier this year at Bajaj's Chakan plant. The bike is set to make its global debut at the 2016 EICMA Motorcycle Show in November. The India launch is due to happen by mid 2017.

So, what does this bike have to offer?

Is it all new or just an upgrade?

We share our in-depth preview on the 2017 KTM Duke 390. Read more to know about it.

Price

In terms of the price, there won't be a major difference from the current bike. As the KTM is localised in India, there won't be a major hike in the pricing. We can expect the pricing to be between Rs 2.2 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh (on-road).

Design

2017 KTM Duke 390: What's new?

The new Duke 390 looks a lot more sporty and stylish than the current bike. In terms of design, it resembles the 1290 Duke with its split headlamp design.

The fuel tank is also larger and sportier in styling. The larger tank makes the big look a lot bigger.

The exposed sub frame, contrast colour on the fuel tank makes it look aggressive.

The meaty tyres, indicators with clear lens, black rear view mirrors and LED tail lamps are carried forward from the existing model.

Engine

The same 373cc engine will be used for the Duke 390. However, this time there will be a bump in power to 44-49 bhp.

This will make the bike a lot more powerful.

There are rumours that recommend a second balancer could also be added and the cylinder's head weight shall be reduced. The bike's engine will be lighter than before.

2017 KTM Duke 390: What's new?

The new KTM bike will get Ride-By-Wire (RbW) and aluminium side mounted exhaust as well. The new bike will meet the BS-IV emission (Euro IV) norms too. The six-speed transmission will continue on the new bike as well.

There will be bigger disc brakes at the front, dual channel ABS and even slipper clutch too.

Mileage

In terms of fuel efficiency, the new bike will return about 40-45 km/l. There won't be a major change in the mileage of the bike. With BS-IV, we could expect a reduction then.

As mileage isn't the main criteria for a KTM rider, the primary focus is on performance.

Speed

The new bike will have better performance. So, we expect a top speed of about 175 km/hr. This is likely to be the top speed on the new bike, which is lighter and even more powerful.

The KTM Duke 390 will have better performance than its predecessor. Bajaj's Pulsar VS400 is coming so the company will be looking at making the Duke 390 an even better performer.

Competition

KTM isn't just targeting the Bajaj Pulsar VS400, but at the same time even the BMW G310R, TVS Akula 310 and even the twin-cylinder Benellis as well. KTM is one of the highest selling bike in this segment. However, now that the segment is growing, the company is looking at adding more and more updates to make it competitive and retain its market share.
