Get the best out of your appraisal

April 9, 2009
Appraisals can be a time for disappointment or jubilation; a time when one's efforts are recognised and rewarded. However, in this time of economic slowdown, appraisals can be more stressful than usual given the fact it not just a salary rise that's being discussed but the actual job itself. You might have performed well, but was it good enough to keep you in the organisation? To help you give your appraisal your best shot, here are some pointers:

Gather data the SMART way

Even if your objectives are not SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound), make an attempt to present your performance in line with SMART objectives. For instance:

  • Delivered Project A with zero per cent schedule variance and nine per cent effort variance.
  • In the last six months delivered 10 projects. Out of that nine projects were delivered with zero defect.

Use performance appraisals as a formal opportunity to self-assess and improve performance

It's not about just doing the job but also how effectively you fit into the team, how you are perceived by the customer, how helpful you are to other departments in the organisation etc. If you do not know the answers, ask your manager or your colleagues for feedback.
