MOVIES
There are films which deal with rape subtly, and there are films which highlight rape scenes explicitly so that it attracts more people.
Biraj Bahu: The landlord rapes Abhi Bhattacharya's wife, Biraj Bahu (Kamini Kaushal). The crime is suggested when Biraj's lantern slips away from her hand and the flame dies out.
The camera focuses on a bottle of medicine, as the liquid slowly drips out.
Damini: Director Rajkumar Santoshi offered a different perspective on rape in his film.
The victim is poor and forced to accept the rape committed by a gang of rich boys. Damini (Meenakshi Seshadri), daughter-in-law in the same house, watches the scene helplessly, and later fights for the victim.
Santoshi stayed away from turning the rape scene into a graphic melodrama.
The crime is indicated by her smudged bindi, Zakmi Aurat: As one man commits the heinous crime, another just watches. And so does the audience. And why is the woman being raped? Because she is a police officer and has to be cut down to size.
Aakrosh: There are films like Aakrosh, where the woman's caste is responsible for her exploitation. Govind Nihalani shows a tribal woman (Smita Patil) getting raped and later killed. Her husband is arrested for her murder. Bandit Queen: Here again, the woman's caste is responsible for her exploitation. Roti Kapda Aur Makaan: Manoj Kumar shot the rape scene explicitly with Moushmi Chatterjee rolling in wheat flour. Later, she bears the rapist's child.
